Subject: Is there a New Engine Break-In period? IP: Logged
Message: I just settled on what I wanted in my new '04 Dakota and went to place the order but found they stopped taking orders a while back. Of course the salesman had told me last week I could still order one! SO, I let him locate one for me. It is about 200 miles away. Long ago when I last ordered a new car there was a break-in oeriod where you couldn't drive it like that right off. I'm told not anymore. Is that true for my new 4.7 V8 / 3:92 gears ???

Message: The owner's manual goes into detail. They usually suggest under 55 mph, with occasional brief full throttle punches to seat the rings. But it's really not that critical. Just don't tow or really put it through its paces and it will be fine. I change the oil at the first 1000 miles.

Message: i can relate jay!!! i ordered an 04 that was loaded to the max. 35,000 + tx (canadian money)every option available, a week later i talk to the dealer and they said the build date is done and no more orders are excepted. this was on mar.18/04. Luckily i know some high up people at chrysler in my city and was able to get it built anyway. it just came in on wednesday apr. 21. not bad timing for a truck that cant be built eh?

Message: Hello, this is my first post here. I ordered my dakota on Mar. 23 and it arrived yesterday. It had 6 mi on the odo when I picked it up, and now it has 131. I've been taking it pretty easy so far, not going over 3000 rpm much. It rides nice, and I think it is going to be a great truck.

Message: Heat cycle the engine 5 or 6 times, then drive it like you stole it.
Took my 2wd RC 4.7 5-speed 3.92 diff to the track with ~320 miles on it, autox'd it the next day with ~350 miles on it. Changed the oil shortly thereafter.

Message: I ordered my '04 on March 17th, and it arrived at the dealer on April 22nd - 5 weeks. It had 8km (5miles) on it when I picked it up. For break in, I'm keeping the RPM fairly low, with a couple of blasts up to 3500 - 4000 in the lower gears. No sustained high RPM, make sure to warm the engine for a bit before driving off. After 500km, I'll open it up a bit more to see how the 4.7l pulls at 5000rpm. Like others have said, hold off on the towing and heavy hauling until you have a few miles on the truck. The brakes and clutch need a bit of time to break in as well.

Message: When I picked up my S/O'd Dak I had to drive it 350 miles back home. The man at the 'in proccessing center' where I picked it up at Bremmerhaven, DE said to vary the speed and nail it frequintly for the first 350 miles (great way to ride back home). So I broke mine in bouncing it off the 115 mph rev limiter for 350 miles. At 800 miles I had Kenne Bell do the Optimizer II PCM reprogram on it and raised the speed limiter to 135 mph, and spent the next 13,000 miles after 'break in' bouncing it off of the 135 mph speed limiter ;) That was 2 years ago and 45,000 miles and it runs like a champ now.
Later,
