Subject: 1993 Dakota rear differential clicking. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1993 Dakota an the rear diff is making a fairly loud clicking noise (you can easily hear it in the cab while driving) that occurs once with each revolution of the rear axle.
The truck still seems to drive fine.... for now.
Has anybody experienced this before and have any idea what exactly the problem might be?
Is the diff about to fail?
I checked the diff fluid and it is fine.
Am I probably looking at a new new rear end or is this fixable?

Message: I was hoping it was just the breaks, but it doesn't seem like it.
I haven't pulled anything apart yet (not sure if I should if it is the differential) but I did block up the back end and let it run in drive while I crawled underneath.
The clicking sound is definitely coming from the diff. It is loudest at the back plate of the differential as opposed to the front by the pinion seal.
I may have one drum break that is dragging a bit (not completely disengaged when I release the parking break). One drum is hotter than the other when I check it after driving.
Maybe a dragging break has added stress to the differential and caused something to break in the diff??
I've replaced pinion seals, axle bearings and breaks before (not all on this vehicle) but have never pulled the gears out of a diff.
I read that differential repairs are specialized work (i.e. may be beyond a home fix-it guy like me).
Maybe it's easier to replace the whole axle assembly??
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appriciated.
