I am about to buy a 2004 Dakota Club Cab 4X4 automatic. The new V6 3.7 puts our 210hp while the V8 4.7 only puts out 20 more at 230hp. It would seem for the extra weight your not getting much more power. In either I believe I'd get the 3.92 rear with "anti-spin". Any experience with which is the best engine?

I hear you V8. I've always favored V8s, but don't plan to tow any weight and worry more about cost and gas mileage. I drove them (not far) and the 3.7 was pretty spunky. The 4.7 seemed slugish if you weren't tromping on it.

I don't plan to tow either, but I got the V8 anyway. I also have a 4x4 club cab. I wouldn't call it sluggish at all (although it is fun to stomp on it). The 3.9 had even worse fuel economy than the 4.7, according to the window stickers, when I bought mine. I don't know about the 3.7, but the slight amount of fuel economy wouldn't be worth it to me. And don't forget resale value, either.
If you aren't planning on towing, and are concerned about fuel economy, why not get the V8 and 3.55 gears? The V8 is only about a $600 option, if I remember correctly.

Well, looks like I should go with the V8. Thanks for the input. I am going to test drive again. I was also confused over the gears. I want the limited slip differential and the Dodge website says it only comes with the 3.92. A dealer told me today could come with 3.55 also. So, maybe I compomise with the V8 and the 3.55 limited slip.
