Subject: Shifting without using clutch IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering if it hard on a tranny to shift the gears without using the clutch. I have been shifting up and down without using my clucth, except for 1st gear. I can do this without grinding the gears, but I do have to rev the motor up a little more before shifting. I find this is easier when driving in the city. Any opinions

Message: It's not worth it man. You can toast your syncros. Not to mention you go through a lot more gas reving it into the high RPMs.

Message: If done right it's actually better on the transmission AND the clutch (obviously). I don't anymore but used to drive truck over the road. VERY rarely (other than into first) will you see an "18 wheeler" use their clutch. Smoother shifts, less clutch wear, and all out easier. And you really aren't getting much higher RPM's. It's called the 400 RPM split shift. Rev engine to 400 rpm's higher than you're at and then ease into the next lower gear for down shifting. The reason it's not a higher RPM that way is think about it, The first thing that happens when you let out the clutch when downshifting into that next lower gear is your engine rev's to match the lower gear! Soo, unless you're a classic "push in the clutch and brake to a stop" without downshifting, it's same same, cept easier..

Message: yes but a "18 wheeler" trans is not the same as a trans in a dakota or anything smaller than the most strait trucks.

Message: I believe you'll find that speedshifting works great in an UNSYNCHRONIZED transmission, and runs the risk of breaking the synchros in a synchronized transmission. You should always use the clutch if you have synchros.
As to wear, my first Daytona had 130K miles on the clutch before the throwout bearing began sticking (from my brother learning to drive and literally smoking it at 88K miles). My current Daytona has 232K miles on original clutch, no slippage. Today's self-adjusting clutches last so much longer, you don't have to play games to extend life.

Message: You people are just nuts in not using you F-ing clutch during shift. Sounds like something Jansey would do since her daddy still pays for her truck!
If you really want to shift freely then get a Powershift transmission. These Class 8 trucks use the Eaton electronic powershifter that shifts as smoothly like a Automatic without even touching the clutch.

Message: Race drivers for years have used the "no clutch" technique to finish road races when the clutch is gone. You simply match the crank rpm to the tranny rpm and slip it (no force needed) into gear. From an absolute dead start, you shut off the engine, and use the starter with first gear engaged to get moving (this is a desperation move and is not recommended). For the owners of manual transmission vehicles, knowledge is the power to keep you from being stranded some day. About 25 years ago, I used the mentioned technique to drive a Subaru 4-speed without a clutch to the dealer 20 miles away. The service writer asked, "HOW did you GET here??", until I told him.

Message: As long as you're not grinding the gears there is nothing wrong with it.....My 90' dak has over 150K on the original clutch and it is still going strong. Mine has been shifted withoutusing the clutch since I bought it with 5000 miles on it. Just habit for me...I drive a strait truck

Message: My truck is a 1988 with 295,000 km (about 183,000 miles) and still has the orginal clutch in it. Whether I use the clutch or not my truck shifts very easily and I have not had any problems yet. Thanks for the opinions everyone
