Message: How much of a difference should I expect from changing the stock muffler to another higher flowing muffler, while leaving the rest of the exhaust stock? Will it sound any better or be any louder?

Message: Yes, it should sound better and possibly louder depending on what muffler you plan on installing. But horsepower wise, it won't do much if anything. To get an increase, you will need a catback system and/or headers.

Message: you'd be surprised how restrictive those cheapo factory mufflers are, at the least replace the tailpipe when you get the muffler to match its output diameter

Message: What year do you have? my 92 had 3 inch exhaust from the cat back to the muffler, then it went down to something like 2.5. It may not be too expensive to switch to a straight 3" system. I believe that 93s also had the 3" exhaust to the muffler.
