Subject: tranny problem? IP: Logged
Message: Im having something funny going on and i wonder if its a tranny problem that is coming. What i have going on is when im driving up a hill and the motor starts to get a load on it something feels like it slipps and i feel and hear a repeated thud. It happens more when im towing and it only seems to happen when i have the overdrive locked out. If i push the gas hard enough to make it downshift or downshift it manually it dosent seem to do it at all. It seems to me that its the torque converter trying to lock/unlock but im not sure if thats it or not. the rpm's never seem to change when this is happening. I changed the flund recently and it didnt cure the problem, the oil level is ok and when i chenged it i didnt find a lot of metal on the magnet. any ideas? the truck is an 02 qc 4x4 4.7;l with the 45rfe tranny.

Message: hey jb, i checked for any TSB's at work and i didnt see any and i have never had to deal with a concern like that. if you have to take it back to the dealer, ask them to use the DRBIII and watch the TCC (Torque Convertor Clutch ) while driving and see if it is cycling. better yet, you drive and let the tech ride and you try to duplicate the concern under the same condtions that the trans goes out of whack. that might help
hope that helps.

Message: Lots of luck jb on trying to find your problem.
Trouble is, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone
that knows anything about trannys let alone get
it fixed. What you're more than likely gonna hear
is, "this is normal".
I bought my last auto. Manual will be my next buy.

Message: Thanks slow2dak. I think the problem has something to do with the torque converter lockup. It only happens at around town speeds with the od off. does shutting the over drive off change the way the converter locks up? what happens is i can feel the converter lock in third then when it tries to unlock is when i feel it buck, its almost like its stuck locked up. it dosent do it as much when the truck is cold either. It has never happened in overdrive and it also dosent happen when i tow my boat with the overdrive off on the freeway.
I havent been able to bring it in yet but i think i will this week as its getting worse. I also dropped the pan again to make sure the filter seal was seated properly and it was fins so i dont think is has anything to do what that.
