Subject: steering intermediate shaft

hey all,

i had my truck in to the dealer recently for a clunking noise/feeling from the front floor. they said they fixed it by lubing the tie rod and the steering stops.

then they said "the Steering Intermediate Shaft has some play and needs to be replaced". they're gonna do it under my extended warranty, but i will have to pay my $100 deductible.

First of all, I don't want to have to pay $100 for something that might not need to be fixed. And the clunking was not in the steering. And this is the first time they've come up with something on their own that needs fixing that will be covered under warranty. I already do not trust them stemming from previous service problems.

does the fact that the intermediate shaft "has some play" really mean anything? if so, what?
is there something i can do to check the severity of the problem myself?

thanks,
jeff

My 02 2wd had the intermediate shaft replaced because I could feel something in the steering moving when I took off and while stopping. My truck also has had the popping noise and feel since the first week I purchased my truck. The new shaft did fix the first problem but not the clunking sound. Everything in the front, including ball joints, tie rod ends, rack, and all bushings are good. I wouldn't replace the shaft for the clunking sound. My clunking sound came from my differential beleive it or not. Hope this helps.

MY 2003 dakota club cab is doing this same thing i can feel something loose in the steering wheel when i take off and brake and i also have the clunking noice, don't know if is from the intermediate shaft is there a way that i can check it by my self or i have to take it to a dealer. also when i put it in reverse gear some times it jumps a little and makes that clunking noice too do you think that it could be from the same shaft problem or it could be the differential like yours was?
I don't do much mechanic work so if theres an easy way that i could check it please let me know this is getting really anoying and the dealer says that everything is normal...

first of all, if its not clunking or anything, the only side effect is that ur steering will be looser. u probly dont even notice it. second of all, i would check to see how much the inter. shaft is.... no point of paying $100 deduct. if it only costs $60. two bolts on either end, it connects the steering column to the steering box or the rack....depending on wut year ur truck is. i have a steering box so if you have a rack it mite be harder but a 13mm socket, extension, and 5 min will take mine out.
