My 2002 Dodge Quad 5 speed V6 will not start at times, like now. I turn the key and all gauges and the radio come on but the starter does not engage. All I get is a click and nothing else. This has happened times before but after a couple of clicks it would start. This has prevented me from taking it in because the problem is intermitent and I can't dublicate it. This time it isn't starting no matter how much I click. Anyone have a suggestion.

If it just clicks that sounds like the classic starter solenoid gone bad problem. Especially if you have been able to make it click a few times before and it would start.

My 87 used to do that, and it was caused by a weak battery (it wasn't enough colcrank to keep charged correctly) so I got a new alternator and battery and it's worked perfectly ever sinced.

Do this. Turn on the headlights, fog lights and the 4 way flashers. It's a quick load test for the battery. If they flash at their normal rate, the battery is probably OK. If they are slow, there's a problem with the battery. Since it's so new, I wouldn't expect a bad ground or loose/corroded terminals, but I'd do a quick visual check anyway. Probably a bad cell in the factory battery. It happens.

Update: Ok it seems that this problem only occurs in warm weather. During the past few days it has been getting hotter and the truck has been having this problem during the mid day. At night when it cools back down it starts fine. We had the same problem last year but not as bad. The whole winter not one problem. Could there be a overheating problem with the starter?
