Subject: Missing 4th gear (overdrive)!! IP: Logged
Message: Have a 93 Dakota 5.2L auto that doesn't shift into overdrive. All other gears work fine and shifting is smooth leading me to believe the problem could be electrical in nature. Any thoughts? Also, I've heard that the tranny will not shift into overdrive until the tranny reaches a certain minimum temp. Where does it get that information, which sensor? On the tranny? Engine coolant temp? Thanks.

Message: Same truck here. Make sure you don't have your OD light on which is located on the button to the left of your steering column.

Message: "Make sure you don't have your OD light on" - shutting the ignition off and on resets that switch, just as it does cruise control. So you can't forget to turn it on for the next trip.
The tranny won't go into OD until the engine coolant temp is at least 60F, and also won't if the throttle is 70% open or more (determined by the voltage output of the TPS). MAP sensor and engine speed and vehicle speed are also inputs in deciding.

Message: The third condition is that lockup won't occur until engine temp is 140F or higher.
This missing O/D problem can be due to:
1) Faulty sensor on tranny cooler line near radiator, or the wiring to it.
2) Defective/clogged/loose solenoid pack on the valve body in tranny. Most common cause, I believe. Mine had loose screws holding it on that allowed fluid to bypass the solenoid check valve, preventing 4th gear and also disengagement of lockup when slowing to a stop. But I replaced it while the tranny was drained. Either tightening screws or replacing solenoids will cure this.
3) Defective/loose wiring to solenoid connector, which is on left side of tranny case.
4) Defective SBEC or connection to it.
Larry may be able to think of other causes, but check these first.

Message: Finally ended up taking it in. First guy told me the tranny was shot and quoted me on a rebuild. Second guy told me he thought that just the OD unit was burned up. Second guy was right, I had it fixed for about $700. Its great now, just like new.

Message: Thats what I was thinking myself. The solenoid pack or clutch could have been worn out completely. The same happens when my transmission shifts in second. For some reason theres not enough presure to shift into 3rd until I let off the padel then get back on it.

Message: My 1997 Dakota is missing all 4 gears. I've gone through 3 trannies. The good news is I still got reverse so I can drive it backwards to the junkyard. I'm done with Dodge. Good Luck to the rest of you.

Message: Well my tranny is still about the same. Not good but still working. I gess I'll just keep it untill it plays out then swap it in for a Jesper transmission. I here there one of the best and longest lesting of any aftermarket transmission.

Message: Try replacing you speed distance sensor on the tail shaft of the transmission. it should be on the driverside of the trans this controls the overdrive and the cruise control. also probably one of the cheapest fixes.
if you decide to have the trans rebuilt there is a place in Eaton Rapids michigan called Jims Performance Transmission. I had them rebuild my A500 from my 91 and i love it. The owner runs a pro stock eliminator dakota. ive got just over 5000mi on mine and love she shifts hard when im getting into it and firm and quick for normal street driving.

Message: Same problem here, the transmission runs smooth until about 45mph then the RPM runs 3100 and just wont go into 4th. I thought maybe my OD switch is broken, but Ill get it checked out this week. Ill tell someone to kiss my ass if they say my tranny is shot because it runs great as long as I stay off the highway. Let you all know what they tell me.

Message: I have a 97 Dakota and it won't shift into
4th or overdrive. It runs at 3000rpm at
60mph. I heard it could be the output
speed sensor but idk. The guy I got the
truck from didn't put a tranny cooler in.
The radiator and tranny cooler are one
unit. I don't want to get rid of this
truck but I have no clue how to get it to
shift

Message: It has to get to 60F to shift into OD and 140F
to engage lockup. The computer gets the
measurement from the coolant temperature sensor
in earlier Dakotas, and at some point (might be
930-95 timeframe), it gets the measurement from
a sensor on one of the fluid lines to the trans
cooler in the radiator.
Usually this is a problem with the solenoids,
which are inside the transmission, screwed to
the right side of the valve body. Check the
electrical plug at the left rear corner of the
trans, and if that's good, you may have to drop
the pan, drain the fluid and change the
solenoids.
Sometimes, the solenoid mounting screws become
loose, and tightening them up will prevent
fluid from leaking around the passage they
control, and that will fix it. But you still
have to drop the pan for that.
