Subject: GRINDING but its NOT the ball joints??? IP: Logged
Message: I just replaced both the upper and lower ball joints on my 99 dakota. I was getting and i still am getting loud grinding when i make turns at slow speeds (ie...driving around a parking lot). It is definetely a metal on metal sound and i cant seem to figure out what else in my front end would be grinding like that?

Message: Its a 2wd and just out of curiosity what do those usually cost to have done? Can they be done yourself or are they too difficult to try?

Message: Well i dont believe 2wd has CV joints. So maybe tie rods or wheel bearing? I haven't done either of these on my Dakota, so i couldnt give you a price. If you have the right tools, some knowhow with a wrench, and a good Haynes Manual (invaluable at $15) you could probably fix it yourself. But you need to diagnose it before you start tearing things apart. Can you at least isolate the noise to one side? You may want to have a mechanic diagnose it, even if you decide to fix it yourself.

Message: I have had similar experiences, twice the rear axle lube and additive was replaced and cured the noise for about 20k miles. (limited slip or sure grip) The other was recently when turning there was a low rumbling/ vibrating coming from the front, replaced both front wheel bearings cured the problem. If it is in your front hubs you can either replace the entire hub and bearing assembly, or you can buy the bearing and replace it. The bearing are non serviceable. My price for a hub at Car Quest is 93.00, the bearing is a Timken set 49 from Auto Zone for 29.00. I bought bearings and did both for $ 60. They need to be pressed out and in.

Message: If your wheel is turned hard against the steering stop and you hit even a small bump this will result in a metal grinding noise from the spindle rubbing against the the lower control arm. try putting some wheelbearing grease on the steering stops. the other thing could be if when you had the wheels off that you bent the dust shield and it touching the rotor.

Message: Id agree with AThought. I had the same problem with my 99 4x4, swore the noise was in the front but changed the oil in my rear diff. and added the mopar friction modifier additive and the sound went away. If you have limited slip diff this very well could be your problem..

Message: That would be a good thought but i dont have 4wd and also i dont have limited slip. I am guessing its the tie rods or wheel bearings like was said above.

Message: I have a 99, and it does have rack and pinion steering. Just a guess when they did the redesign in 98 it would have it also.
