Subject: Code 1-2 IP: Logged
Message: Help. I'm trying to sort through an emission problem ('91 Dakota 3.9 V6), so I recently ran the 'check engine' diagnostic trick.
It didn't flash the initial 8-8 (start of codes) as the manual stated, but rather a 1-2 code (memory standby lost) followed by a 5-5 code (5-5 indicating the end of codes according to the manual).
I read about resetting it via removing the negative cable and holding the key on 'start' for twenty seconds, yet that didn't work. Can anyone help guide me in the right direction? Your reply is greatly appreciated.

Message: Uhh...you lost power when you disconnected the battery cable, so you set code 12 all over again. Wait about 40-50 stop-start cycles on the ignition and it will clear. Code 55 is always present. I have never seen code 88 on any car, I'll bet it's only seen through the plug-in code reader.
What is your emissions problem, and what are the symptoms?

Message: Bob,
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your response. I'd done a search about the code 12 problem recently, and the conclusion seemed to be the above scenario. Needless to say, it didn't work and I still have a code 12.
I failed California smog with high NOx readings. I know the EGR system was down for a considerable amount of time and, despite the fact I'd changed the valve and transducer last year, I suspect the intake manifold's EGR passage is clogged. It was my hope that I could check for trouble codes before starting this job in case it would save time/money.
On a related note: do you know if removing the throttle body would be sufficient to clean the EGR passages, or is removal of the intake manifold needed? Also, what is your favored way to release pressure in a non-multi-point system? The method outlined in the Haynes manual doesn't seem to relieve any pressure.
**The code 88, apparently, is the system's way of letting you know the process is starting. Again, this is according to Haynes. Since I haven't seen a code 88 yet I can't say if the information is accurate.
