Subject: Clanging from Front When Off Brakes
IP: Logged

Message:
As I was pulling into a parking lot yesterday, I noticed that there was a clanging, metal on metal sound coming from the driver's front wheel when I would hit any potholes. I also noticed that the sound went away when I applied the brakes. I haven't had them apart yet, but I was thinking maybe there are some clips or something that have come loose in the caliper/pad assembly. Any of y'all come across anything like this? All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric - http://photos.yahoo.com/jes_96

Yep, happened to me. The spring/pressure clip that holds the inner pad to the piston (and effectively, the caliper) has rusted off the pad. Now, what you're hearing is the pad rattling in there. Of course, when you apply the brakes, it pressures the pad up to the rotor, and thus, the sound is gone.

check to see if the outer anti-rattle clip is on the outer pad/caliper housing. it is a metal sprung clip and it looks like an exagerated w shape. you may be able to see it without removing wheel depending on which wheels you have on the truck. replacing takes only a second after removing the wheel in question
