Subject: So I test drove a 2004 F-150.... IP: Logged
Message: And although I still don't want one... I have to say that ford certainly has come a long way with that pickup. The features, the 5.4L, the little things all spoke very loudly of care and consideration for what makes a nice pickup. Now If the exterior styling was a little better, I might just go buy one. The only reason why I thought about posting this is to let someone who might be looking at a fullsize pickup know that the ford isnt that bad anymore. GM is still a load of crap warmed over with $10,000 more on the base price, but ford is definately getting nicer. Ram or F-150? Anyone else thought about a F150?

Message: If I was in the market for a full size truck I'd definitely consider the new Ford F-150. I like the stylings on the outside more so than the Chevy but I question the center console having not sat in one first hand. I think I'd rather two bucket seats with some kind of fold down arm rest or a bench seat. I don't like the idea of my "truck" having the shifter in the center console. Maybe I just need to test drive one. Mr. Sleepy, how did you find the responsiveness of the 5.4L in comparison to our 4.7L's?

Message: I found the center shifter to be a refreshing change. I've driven on the column shifters all my life and always thought they weren't sporty and definately in the way of things. The 5.4L doesn't compare with the 4.7 because the F-150 is heavier and the 5.4 was built for torque rather than speed. It moved that pickup fairly well, but you won't win and red light races with it. The 4.6 is like shoving a V6 in a Ram, you get what you expect. The 4.6 is a dog and couldn't pass itself, but the 5.4 makes up for its little brother fairly well. Throttle response is delayed quite a bit by comparison to the 4.7. Yeah the arm rest is a little strange but power sliding rear window, and power rear cab windows that roll down?!? What a treat! GM and Dodge might want to take some notes.

Message: So you know, the console shifter and full length console is only found on the higher end models, I think just the FX4 and Lariat models. The lower model, xl, stx, and i think the xlt have the 40/20/40 split bench and column shifter.

Message: I too like the roll down rear/side windows. Such a neat option, beats the hell out of my vents and split rear window...

Message: Ford is going to have to have about a 10year solid track record before I would drive one of their piles. I have seen too many friends / Family drive them, and the cars just start falling apart after about 50k miles. It starts with all the plastic junk... then the cars just start to creak and groan making all kinds of strange noises, around 70k the tranny will fall out and need a major repair... i guess it would be a great car to lease, and turn back in every 24k miles... but i would never own one.

Message: I actually like them also, but,
you talk about a floor shifter, for what, going from park to D?
DOES IT COME WITH A MANUAL, 5 OR 6 SPEED?

Message: Theres only a slush box, no manuel justa new 4 speed (4R75W) that is new with the 3 V V8.
I happend to test drive one out myself (top of the line larait modle and was very impressed with the low in tourqe. About 300 ftbls @ just 1000 RPMS. Its not like the other hi reving motors you might see in a GM or even a Dodge truck for that matter.
Also you got to test drive the Titan. I'm still waiting in line to do so.

Message: I drove a titan before buying my 04 dak, drove nice and if i was in the market for a full size truck i would really consider it, but it is HUGE and you feel it driving. I really had issues with the tiny tires they put on stock. even the dealer where im at had custom rims / tires on all the show models (add 2k to the sticker to drive off with those) Its really a towing machine, lots of low end torque, lots of power, but not a good daily driver.
