Subject: 4.7L Gen II? IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know what is required to put a 4.7L is a Gen II Dakota? The truck is a '92 and the 4.7L will replace the 3.9L, auto.

Message: Everything including trans and rear end along with computer and probably instrument cluster. I don't think anyone can really say exactly for it's such a new motor and probably more cost efective to sell the old and buy a Gen III unless you have a cheap cheap written off or stolen gen III in which case rip it all out. Weight won't matter because the 2 engines are very close so the suspention will be fine.

Message: Doesn't it belong to the insurance company then? I assume they bought it by writing it off and it will end up at a bone yard eventually. At least that's what would happen up here in British Columbia.

Message: You could probably make it work, but is it really worth it? The 4.7 has far more electronics than the 3.9, so my guess is that it would be an electrical nightmare that would cost a small fortune to make work. If I were in your shoes I'd be looking for a 5.2 or 5.9. That would be much closer to a plug and play. Besides, there's really no advantage to going with a 4.7 over a 5.2/5.9, especially when you consider the volume of performance parts available for the 5.2/5.9.

Message: The reason I decided on the 4.7L is because I have the motor, transmission, and all the electronics available for the transplant. Also it hard to find a 5.2 or 5.9 because everyone that has a gen I or II is putting them into the trucks and making them hard to find and order.
