Subject: Got in a fender bender, need quick help IP: Logged
Message: So hit a truck in front of me today like a dummass. I need to adjust the bumper. I took a couple bolts out already so the pics looks worse than they are but my right tire rubs when I turn left now so I need to adjust it back up and forward a couple inches. Any ideas?

Message: I've taken my bumper off before and since the holes to mount the bumper aren't slotted, unless you make a custom bracket to extend the bumper forward you won't be able to move it forward. You could raise it by putting washers under the main bolt(s) on the frame to the side of the radiator. I think those bolts are pretty lengthy. Hope that helps. It'd be much easier if you could just take the bumper off and find some way to bend it back even a bit.

Message: Thanks for the reply. I see there are two bolts on either side in front of each wheel. Now I am stuck. I see some plastic screws all around where the license plate is but they won't come out. Even if I have to drive without a bumper for a few days I would be fine but like I said I am scraping.
Can you share your removal instructions if able.
Many thanks

Message: Ok, there are 2 bolts on either side of the radiator that hold the bumper. I think it's like a 19mm for those and they are tough to get loose probably gonna need a hammer. If you get under the truck there is a bracket on both sides also attaching the bumper to the frame. I think there are a couple lower bolts on this bracket that are actually welded to the frame. There are some bolts at the other end of the bracket that can be loosened. I'm not sure what you mean about plastic screws around the license plate. I know that there is a piece of plastic that faces down at the ground and is attached to the bottom of the valence panel. That is held in place with plastic screws which you just have to pull on to get them to come out. You can just push them back in and they will stick in place. They are like fake giant plastic screws with threads that just grip in place. If that don't help I got an FSM I can scan a page or two.

Message: I am not sure what year your truck is, but i have an 02' that the same thing happened to. I hit a cherokee with the right side and it pushed everything back. when you open the hood there are four bolts (two on each side) that hold the bumper on. if you take those off, the whole bumper will come off and lay on the ground (rubber piece on bottom can stay on) The bumper brackets then bolt to the frame with two nuts. loosen those and slide the brakets all the way forward (most likely got pushed back on impact) and bolt everything back up. it might still be a bit tweaked, but it shouldnt rub. also make sure your inner fenders are tucked into the bumper or they will rub.

Message: I guess I should have mentioned year. 2001. so you are saying I can just remove the two bolts on either side (right in front of each tire) and the bumper should come off. Maybe it just feels like there are more cause it got jammed in? Did I mention I hate accidents. Never a good time. But thanks for the tips, very much appreciated.
I went to 3 different auto stores last night and none of them had a haynes in stock for my year. just every other frekin year and car.

Message: I had the same thing happen to me once except I hit a deer and I was in a big truck (18 wheeler), the tire was rubbing. I used a load strap (3" web strap) and wrapped one end around the bumper and the other end around a loaded trailer leg. I backed up slowly and the bumper bent back in place.
If you try this use 4Low if you have it, make sure to do it GENTLY. Make certain that your anchor point is SOLID. And you may wanna take the bumper cover off so you don't colapse it. It sounds lame but it worked and it was easy. Try it at your own risk..
