Yeah that 4.7 is just a horrible motor. It's responsive to mods, gets better gas mileage, weighs less, has silky smooth throttle response, and sounds mean as shi^ with an exhaust on it. Plus it keeps you from spinning your tires all the time by giving you the power higher up in the rpm range where you can actually put it to the ground easier.
ABSOLUTE JUNK if you ask me.

Message: I like the 4.7 in the wife's Durango. Don't see any reason why it wouldn't last 200,000 miles. I've been told that if you change oil every 3,000 miles you won't have any sludge issues.
One of the worst engines I can think of was the alum. 4 cyl. Vega engine from the early '70s.
Have heard that the 2.7 Chrysler is junk, but I don't know anyone who has one.

Message: The 4.7 mileage is just as bad as a 318. I know because I drive one. The 318 provides you with a nearly bullet-proof design that lasts practically forever. The 318 doesn't have aluminum heads and all the problems associated with them. It was also a fairly simple design which could be worked on by the average joe. I've heard many complaints about the idle properties and sludge buildup on the 4.7 also. The mod prices on the 4.7 are priced out of this world too.

Message: Sure kj, you're absolutely right - I hate the way my 4.7 puts out as much power as the slightly thirstier 5.2. I hate the way the aluminun heads are resistant to detonation from the extra timing advane I have. I hate how simple the HO cam chnge was; not having to pull the radiator for access. I hate the way the lighter reciprocating mass will rev. And I especially hate the way I will never a problem with a bad belly pan gasket.

Message: Chrysler- Definately the 2.0L SOHC and DOHC put in the 95-99 Neons. After they put more than a million Neons on the road they decide to change the head gasket design to one that wont fail after 40k-60K miles. Very rough sounding and running engine...can you say rock in a tin can?

Message: 2.0L Chrysler Junk? I guess BMW is selling junk these days since they chose Chrysler's 2.0 and some smaller (1.8L ?) variations of it for their 4cyl applications.
Hands down, the worst engine to ever be put in a car is GM's 2.8L V6. It was so bad that even GM gave up on it.
The 400 SBC and the 4.3L V6 follow a close 2nd and 3rd place.

Message: As far as GM goes...
the 2.8 v-6 is junk, 60 degree junk at that
the 4.3 v-6, is only good if you like replacing broken cranks
the 400 SBC is OK for 1/4 mile at a time, other than that the siamesed bores distort and lose ring seal.
Ford...
352--- what were they thinking?---all torque but no power.
Chrysler...
That damn high po 383 I had in an old satellite sebring that broke the timing chain and left me stranded in the middle of the boone docks... before the time of cell phones

Message: The worst chrysler engine that i have ever had the pleasure to see in use is the 2.? that used to be in the Dakotas. The 120 hp didn't get the thing going at all. My 92 dakota cc with 3.9 v6 got better fuel economy than my friends 97 rc wiht 4 banger cuz he had to drive it so hard to get it going/keep it going.

Message: I wasn't referencing my 3 pics on HP or fuel mileage numbers. My opinion was based on experiences with mechanical failure on vehicles that I,ve owned and vehicles friends and family have owned.
The 2.8L I owned went through 2 camshafts, 2 timing chain/sprocket sets, 3 timing chain tensioners, 1 oil pump, 3 ignition coil packs, 2 sets of rod bearings, 2 water pumps, and one timing chain front cover in 109,000 miles.
The biggest, heaviest, slowest dog motor ever made has to be the 225 Slant Six Dodge. They would run forever, but they were slow as molasses.
Both Chevy and Ford I6's would run circles around the Slant 6.

Message: Yeah. The 4.7 using O-Rings instead of GASKETS you have to SCRAPE off was a bad idea wasn't it???
Damn. I can change my t-stat 20 times and NOT need a new O-Ring or have to scrape a gasket off.
And the cam swap???? I didn't need a SINGLE gasket for that either! O-Ringed valve covers that will probably NEVER leak!!!!!!!!
Easiest V8 Dodge has made to work on in a LONG time. The exhaust manifolds are even better.
Now for Junk:
Chevy 2.8 V6 is a piece of sh*t I agree!
The stock 454's were mostly dogs as well and were typical to have lifter licking noises where they sounded like they were low on oil all of the time.
305? My old Hot Rod buddies called them "Silver Dollar Pistons" because they were so small. First thing to do if you got a ride with a 305? Swap in a 350!
Ford's 400 was a big heavy dog. Lots of Torque but no HP. On the flip side their 289/302/351 Windsors may be one of the best engines of all.
Dodge? Anything they stuck that "Lean Burn System" on got ruined.
The previous Chrysler minivans were using MITSUBISHI V6's. They are the ones that blew head gaskets and warped heads often.
Our 2004 Grand Caravan has a Chrysler 3.8 V6. Runs great.
Honda (ha ha ha). Anyone remember Honda in the 1980's???? Lets see. 3 barrel carb. 50 vacuum hoses going to about 20 different electric selenoids, 1 exhaust valve. 1 main intake valve, and 1 pre-intake valve or whatever they called it that went to that really small barrel of the 3 barrel carb. Other companies followed that 21 valve thing for a while. The tiny valves would fry often, but could be changed like a spark plug without removing the head. It was junk though! I sure as hell don;t see very many of those outside of a junk yard!

Message: I agree on the Hondas. Mitsu did the same pre-intake valve crap and that "Feed-Back" carb was a nightmare! The carb alone cost more than a complete rebuild on a 350SBC. That's no B.S.
The feed-back carb for the 1.5/1.8L Mitsu cost over $650.00 back in 1989.
Graph,
This thread was asking which of the "BIG 3"
has the worst engines. That's why I picked the 2.8L V6 GM engine. If we include foriegn makes then I have to say the 1.5/1.8L Mitsu 4cyl is the biggest POS ever made!
