Message: I have no idea why you had problems changing the plugs on the 4.7. I just did mine on sat and all told it took like 20 min to do the whole deal. If you think the 4.7 is bad try a 4.3l chevy motor in an s10. the plugs are all on the side and access is a bi#$h to say the least. The middle plug on the drivers side is a royal pain because the steering shaft is so close you almost cand gat a socket on it and when you do you have to turn the socket with a open end wrench bscause you cant get a ratchet on it. i have no problem with my 4.7 i think its a great motor and has been a pleasure because i havent had to work on it other then plugs and a belt, both very easy.
My list of worst motors
ford 2.9 v6. those thigs ate head gaskets for lunch
gm 4.6,5.3,6.0 and 8.1l v8's piston slap need i say more
Mistu 2.2l four turbo found in the dodge daytona and plymoputh laser. The head on that thing should have been put on a hinge. I had a daytona that i put 7 head gaskets into in 4 years.

Message: Try changing the plugs on a 1987-9? Grand Am with a 2.8L V6. Part of intake covers the 3 plugs closest to the fire wall. You can't get to the one in the middle without unbolting pieces to the intake/throttle body and linkage.
Even worse, try a Mid-70's Chevy Monza with the rare optional V8. You had to undo the engine mounts and hoist the motor up in the air about 4 inches before you could get to the plugs.

Message: Try changing the plugs on an old 70-81 Trans Am with AC. The driver side is a breeze, but the passenger side takes an act of Congress to get done cuz the dang compressor just flat covers the entire area. You have to jack the car up and go in thru the wheel well!!! What a PITA.
I will admit that changing the plugs on my 4.7 took longer than I expected cuz I didn't realize I had to take off the air hat and intake crap and was just trying to work around them. Once I got frustrated and started removing that stuff I realized that that was obviously how the job was intened to be done and then got the work done quickly. Put in Autolite copper cores for about $8 which beat the hell out of the $160 the deal wanted to charge me!!!! UN-FREAKIN-REAL!!!!! What a screw job that would've been.
Anyway, point is... once you know *how* to do it, it's not a big deal!!

Message: I'm on their side kj,
Taking off the air hat is a 2 minute job, no biggee. This is a higher tech engine, but easy to work on.
As has been said: New 180 t-stat change, or the valve covers for the cams, or the intake for an intake manifold change, and
NO GASKET SCRAPING!!!!!
NO NEW GASKET!
That right there saved alot of time and effort.
The 4.7, a nice engine and a pleasure to work on, hands down.

Message: So what is the REAL deal with people throwing in these AUTOLITE plugs over the stock on the 4.7???
I'm just sceptical over any gains using another plug if there isn;t any problems with the stock ones, i.e. too hot/cold heat range, etc.
On a similar deal I'm currently trying to find someone in a parts store who knows jack sh*t about parts anymore other than selling light up tail pipes and intake tubes for HONDA's!
It's so frustrating. Years ago people working in Checker, etc new this sh*t.
Earlier tonight I was looking for a colder plug for my Yamaha ATV. I just changed the piston going from 9.5 to about 10.6 in compression. I need a COLDER plug to stop some detonation I have now once it warms up. It would be cheap at Checker. The ATV motor sports part depo will rape me for plugs!
