I'm surprised nobody mentioned the L4 1.6-2.0 Ford Escort engine. Most of the eighties 1.6s were built with an improperly heat-treated #1 cylinder sleeve. The other three would wear fine but #1 would often wear at an angle. I saw some that the piston had been rubbing against the ridge at the top of the cylinder. They had a domed piston with valve recesses.
They got a little more reliable after that.

GM-I would have to say the 6.2 Diesel or 2.8 kind of a toss-up there.

Chrysler-Pick anything they put a Mitsu in during the 80s-90s. A friend of mine has made a killing on all the cracked heads and bent valves (you could pretty much guarantee the timming belt was gonna go at 50,000mi). Not to mention all the infamous oil-burning vans around. Mitsubishi might be the worst engine builder of all the manufacturers.
If it has to be a pure chrysler then I gotta go with the Neons tractor like 2.0. Just not known for it's silky smoothness LOL.

I love my 4.7, works great.

The Chevy 2.8 was a dog though. I put 101000 on mine in a s-10 Blazer, pulling a 2horse trailer around the South. Never had a problem with it at all. It was way under powered though. If that Blazer had a 4.7 I'd probably still be driving it. The Bosch 5-spd with the LSD and 4 wheel was the best I've had until the AWD in my Dak.

I'll sub in Mazda for Ford. They're pretty inbred now and include the RX2 and Rx3 Rotary. The Apex seals went out at 50000 on two of them I had. The dealer was great. He's plug a new one in like a battery change an charge you 15 bucks for oil and stuff. Best dealer I ever worked with. The new rotary after the Seventy's solved the problem. They're nearly bullet proof. I have a 82 Rx-7 we bought new.

My third chose is any motor made by British Leyland. Had to work on them constantly. The XKE Jag was the worst. Way to complex.

Ok my turn, the 1.9L in the 89 escort i had was a real dog! It took forever to pass an average truck (3spd auto) it smoked all the time sucked gas like crazy.

Next is the chev 2.8. My grandpa's celebrity wagon has been worked on so many times, Its basically got a new engine under the hood lol. (And my dad’s 6.0L in his 2500HD sounds like a diesel when it’s first started. (Knock knock, who’s there? Oh it’s the 6.0L Chevy!!)

The only real gripe i have on dodge is the magnum engine intake plenum pan. I mean come on you'd think the engineers would know that steel and aluminum contract/expand at diff rates! The 360 in my dad's company truck sounds like 2 skeletons tap dancing on a metal roof when he’s on the gas!

Deerridge,
The 2.8L I was refering to was put in some of the sub-compact/mid-size potiacs and buicks and the Celebrity 2.8L was nearly identical (was internally). I don't think it shared anything with the 2.8L in the S10. In fact, when I did my salvage parts searches all the donor cars I got parts from for the engine were Buicks. I don't know when the engine started and ended production, but it was a short lived engine. My 1987 Grand Am had one. Most of the service shops would tell me that My 87 V6 was the only one they had ever seen. I'd tell them it's the same one that's in the Buicks/Celebs.

It was MUCH worse than the 2.8L in the S10. If you have ever heard a late 80's or early 90's Buick Summerset with a rod knocking going down the road it more than likely has the 2.8L V6. I put 2 sets of rod bearings in that engine by the time it hit 99,000.

There is no doubt in my mind that the 2.8L was the worse American engine ever built as far as reliability is concerend.

I stand by my opinion of the 4.7 V8. The guy who designed that mechanical a**hole should shoot himself. It's truly sad when you practically have to tear the top of the engine down to change plugs. It should be a routine 15 minute job that isn't money bait for chrysler dealers. I'm tired of screwing with it. I'll just pay the $50 per/hour to hear someone else swear and get frustrated.

Nevermind I found one. I can see what kj is talking about now. That's weird usually having ohc makes the engine compartment cleaner. Sure am glad I got the 5.2 since I like to work on my own rig sometimes.

I don't know about the old Mitsu engines, but the more current 3.5L 6 in the Montero Sport are rock solid. They routinely see 200K+ with no major issues.

Here's my 4.7

I removed the AIR HAT and used a regular 3" ABS elbow. Same thing as what the AIR HAT did but cleaner. I have no trouble getting to anything on this engine. And like I said, it's got O-Rings instead of gaskets that you have to skrape off on many parts. Spark plugs don't look hard to me. Probably just need a long socket and extension. But how often do you need to change them on a 4.7? Every 100k miles or something? Vs. how often on the older engines????

Yeah. Thought so.

Ok. seriously it looks like the Chevy 2.8 FWD engine is so far in the lead for being the biggest P.O.S. engine.

Mitsubishi's in the 1980's were pretty much ALL junk! The 1998 mitsubishi 2.5 V6 in the car we just got rid of was great. Had 80K on it and didn't leak any oil or smoke or rattle, etc. Of course they beefed that engine up. Chrome molley rings I believe and some other improvements.

I did change the timing belt, drive belts, t-stat and some other stuff right before we got rid of it as preventive maintenance. It was a b*tch to get to all of that stuff.

KJ,

sorry you've had problems. I meant easy to work on, as Graphite had said. The HO cam mods, HO manifold, 180 Tstat, porting the 68mm TB, removing the clutch fan, etc. were easy. Never had a mechanical prob with the engine.

How often are you changing plugs? I put in a set of 3923's, when I was doing my cam swap, so it was easy. One set should last a long time though.

Todd, the book says every 30,000 miles. I'm assuming that they come with standard plugs and not platinum like many seem to think. I'm going to have to remove the factory air intake system in order to free up some room. Then I will have to figure out how to deal with those lines running across the top.

the air hat is easy to pull off.
then just remove three clips that hold the pipes in place and you have plenty of wiggle room.
then all you need is a deep well socket, 6 inch extension (3 inch for #8) and a ratchet.
Really easy, I have changed mine twice.
It is a whole lot easier to change them, then on my Small block chevy with headers.

LOL this just keeps getting better.

KJ If you find that trying to swap spark plugs in a 4.7 dak is difficult then you deserve to pay the money to get it done. There are plenty of cars that ARE WAY more difficult to get to the plugs. What does that have to do with "worst engine" anyways.

Try to get to the plugs on a Firebird. Does that make the LS-1 one of the worst engines ever?????????

LOL you people slay me.

Well, that was mostly frustration. After I took all that stuff off it wasn't all that bad to access the plugs. I had 30,000 on the Champions that were in there and they looked very worn. I put the recommended Autolites in and what a change for the better.
