Subject: Gear Whine @ 3.92
IP: Logged

Message:
I just had my gears swapped from 3.55 to 3.92 for towing purposes. I expected some gear whine but I have alot more then I expected. It is very pronounced when you put your foot on the gas. The shop I am working with is correcting it but they also mentioned that Dodge (especially Dakotas and RAM 1500's) are notorious for louder then normal gear whine. Has anyone done a change with aftermarket gears and had loud gear whine? I have Precision gears in the rear and Chrysler in the front. I have a 2003 Quad Cab, 4x4, 4.7l with 5 speed manual.

I had Precision 4.10s until a worn u-joint loosen up my pinion nut ultmately causing a ring gear failure and I'm now running 4.10s Yukon gears (Randy's ring and pinion) and have had no noticeable whine with either set. I'd have them recheck the setup as that can make them whine. I'd guess most likely the backlash isn't set quite right.

typically gear whine is cause by the ring and pinion being too far apart. This is checked by verifying the wear pattern. Definitly take it back to who ever set up your gears because they did it wrong. If they say that it's set up correctly, make them show you the wear pattern. It should look like an oval dead center of the ring gear tooth.

I have factory 3.92's in mine. AT 49,000 miles, I can't hear any gear whine.

I have 3.92's in my truck from the factory with the LSD, and it has always whined a little. I did discover one thing, however - the gears in the 5spd manual transmission in these trucks are very straight, so they tend to make noise also. The straighter the gear the noisier it will be.

I'd have to agree with the last two posts though - have the shop recheck the setup and make sure they put the LSD additive in the gear oil too if its a LSD differential.

I should have noted that mine also has LSD but they knew that going. I will post the update once my truck returns from the shop. I took the manager out and he absolutely agreed that it was far too loud. I should have put in the 3.92's from the factory when I ordered but I wasn't planning on towing anything at the time.

I just swapped my 3.55s out for Richmond 3.91s and have no gear whine. I thought gear whine wasn't an issue until you hit ratios like 4.10 and up? If you have gear whine I would think it's an incorrect install.

listen to Petey Da Man.
I would also suggest that you do not drive it hard or for any length of time, you do not want to run gears that are set wrong, or they will always be noisy.

I have a set of 3.55s. Dana 35 fronts (97-99 Dakotas) and 8.25" rears for the 29 spline axle (most 97-up Dakotas - I don't remember which trucks got the 9.25" axle). Make me an offer. uwgriz@yahoo.com
