 Subject: Sputtering Problem

My 1999 Dakota has been acting up as of late. While cruising along, I'll try to accelerate a bit and it will begin to sputter. RPM's go down, and I have to either let off the gas or step on it to make it stop. It seems to me like it isn't getting fuel or something, so I thought "FUEL FILTER" but the garage tells me that the fuel filter is in the gas tank. They changed plugs, rotors, distributor cap and rotor. And of course when I take the mechanic out in the truck, I can't make it happen. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
