Subject: Jeep tranny the same as Dak? IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know if the Jeep Cherokee 91-00 is the same tranny in the 5.2 Daks. If not then what tranny is in the Jeep and any thoughts on their reliability.

Message: No, the 6 cyl. Jeep used an AW-4 (Aisin-Warner) auto, and the 5.2 uses a 46RE auto (Chrysler). The AW4 will last much longer and give fewer problems. I've owned both...

Message: See if they upshift and downshift (i.e., kickdown for passing) smoothly, if the gears engage smoothly (e.g., clunks or bangs are bad). Check the fluid, it should be red/dark pink in color. Brown, dark, or black fluid is a major red flag. Check for leaks, ask how often maintenance was done (what mileage intervals the fluid was changed at, IF it was changed, etc). Typically, fluid changes should be done every 30-50,000 miles. Stay away if it slips or chatters while normal driving.
Jeep AW4's are nice, they have a drain plug in the pan for easy fluid changes.

Message: just a FYI, the 5.2 uses the 44re. The 46re is for the 5.9
