Message: On the way home to day my 93 4x4 Dakota with a 318, auto tranny and over 106,000 miles on it cut out on me. I was at a light and it was partialy warmed up and I look at my gauges to see the little oil symbol light on and I thought my pump went out or something since the radio was up and I didnt feel the truck shut off. I put it in park and it starts up just fine. Then later on in the day I park it at a freinds house and when I go to leave, I crank it over for 3 or 4 seconds and it doesnt turn over. So I do this 2 or 3 more times before it finally starts and its a little weak at first but it gets going. I replaced the fuel filter about 4,000 miles ago, the plugs, wires, cap & rotor about 2,000 miles ago and replaced the air filter and ran some injector cleaner about 1,000 miles ago. The battery is a Die Hard and was in it when I bought the truck with a little over 98,000 miles on it. I run regular octane(87) gas from Exxon and have never had a problem in the past. Also, I cleaned my IAC plunger a little bit ago and is it possible that twisting the plunger slightly can do anything since the rpm's at idle when its warming up are at 600? I dont have any idea what it can be and I am fairly inexperienced at things like this.

Message: How much gas did you have in your tank at the time and how hot was it outside? My thoughts are that it could be vapor lock. My wife's car is vapor locking and I am currently searching for a solution. It does it on warmer days when it has under 1/2 tank of gas. The higher elevation of Colorado also contributes to it. I am currently searching for a solution to this. The first thing I'm going to try is replacing the thermostat with a 180 degree t-stat. Let me know if that sounds like your truck and I'll post any solutions.

Message: My thoughts are more along the crankshaft position sensor or possibly pick-up coil.

Message: I heard that if you put clothes pins on the fuel line it helps to disperse the heat so the gas remains liquid instead of turning into a vapor. This was the solution on older makes and models. Any thoughts?

Message: From what I understand vapor lock is not possible on a MPI fuel injected engine, only on a vehicle with a carb.I live in Colorado and have never had a problem with my 93 Dakota vapor locking.I tend to agree more with CyberWolf.Have you checked the tell tell wire problem by the relay box?

Message: I know years ago my moms honda civic which was fuel injection and not carb. vapor locked on me after I filled the car up. I got about 200 yards away from the gas station and it felt like it was flooding out. the car just cut off. wouldnt fire up. just turned over. well I had to get to work. so I walked home and get ready for work and have a friend take me. told mt parents where the car was. they went out and fired right up. so dont tell me a fuel injected car cant get vapor lock.

Message: So you describe a motor that won't turn over, and then turns over slowly and cranks finally.
Ever think the starter or battery is going bad.
