Subject: idle surging/dealer runaround IP: Logged
Message: Hey all-
I have a 2000 Dak QC 4.7 and I have had an idle surging problem for about 2000 mi. Sometimes if I am at a stoplight with my foot just resting on the pedal, it can actualy start moving the truck forward and i feel like i have to press nice and hard to stop from rear-ending the guy in front.
It seems to happen more when the AC is ON. I took it to the dealer and they say (without looking at the car first!) that I need a fuel system treatment/throttle body cleaning. That's NOT covered by the extended bumper-to-bumper warranty that's about to expire, of course! they want a measly $100 but it's on principle that I am fighting this.
On top of this, i convince the cute warranty girl to "update the PCM" for free and maybe that will fix it. When I picked it up (from having other work done under warranty) i asked her what version of the software went on there. She says something to the effect of there are no versions. So I say what Date is the software? same BS. how do they keep track if there are no version numbers. anyways, it wasn't on the receipt sheet either. probably wasn't done.
So I call the Hendrick Autoguard warranty headquarters in Dallas, and they basicaly say that "the fuel system service is not covered by warranty"
so I say "What about the fact that they aren't even sure that's the problem? If I pay $100 and this doesn't fix it, I get my money back??"
them: "uhh"
So i guess my question is this: from what i read here, the TPS is going to be the fix. Is there a TSB on this? If so, does that mean it's covered under warranty? What about the fact that they may be purposely mis-diagnosing the problem until I am out of warranty and have to pay 2x for this??
Please help, i love my dak!

Message: Sounds like it's more trouble than what it's worth. Personally, I'd just go down to the auto parts store, shell out the $21 for a new TPS, and take the three minutes to install it. Very easy job. Worst that could happen is the TPS wasn't the problem, and you're out $21 and three minutes ... definitely worth a shot in my book. Also, make sure you reset your PCM when you're done.

Message: not tps as a bad tps would affect at all engine rpm, it is automatic idle control motor or AIC. the big hint="It seems to happen more when the AC is ON." aic automatically speeds up idle to compensate for AC load.

Message: Well, hopefully I fixed it myself yesterday. i went out after posting this and took apart the throttlebody. TPS was clean as a whistle. seems like it couldn't really get dirty by the way it looked sealed off from the actual throttle intake.
anyways, i pulled off the IAC and it was all crusty with carbon stuff. cleaned it with throttle body cleaner, used q-tips in the channel where the plunger extends down into the throttle intake, etc.
I actually thought i had broken the thing because i knew it was a plunger and so i pulled on the littleplunger thingie and it came all the way off into 4 pieces (plunger, sheath, spring, and motor body) but i just puched them back together and hoped for the best.
Reset PCM, let it idle for 2 min a/c off, 2 min a/c on, then drove around a bunch last nite. seems to be fixed. I'll let you guys know. Also, i was never able to find a TSB on this, i guess cause it's caused by normal gunking up of the TB componants and not some insidious DC plot or coverup. How disappointing. Oh well,
thanks guys!

Message: I took mine to dealer with that exact problem and they did a ECM update and it went away. Granted I now have the update from HELL and get the lousiest MPG ever but the idel surges are gone.
