Subject: 5QT Mobil1 for $19.95
IP: Logged

Message:
Wal-Mart just marked down their everyday low price for the 5qt container of Mobil 1 from $22.?? to $19.95. That's if anyone cares. I know Amsoil is supposed to be better. Just thought that for those of us that don't have deep enough pockets to spend $70.00 for an oil change might like to know they can do it for $25.00 at Wal-Mart using the 2nd best oil and a tech-2 oil filter.

I just bought a 1998 Dodge Ram with the 5.9L Cummins Diesel
and the local diesel shop (Valesco) actually recommended that I
use the 15w-40 AMSOIL Diesel Engine Oil and it just blew my
mind because I am already using the AMSOIL in my other trucks.

I know that "wally world" sells Mobil1 and I know they also offer
cheap a$$ filters but nothing will save you money like AMSOIL
so why bother ?

If I kept a car for 400,000 miles I guess I would get my money back on Amsoil. I usually get rid of them somewhere around 200,000 miles. I don't see where I would save money spending $70.00 an oil change Vs. $25.00 an oil change when I'll get 200,000 miles out of it either way. I change my oil every 3-4K regardless of the name brand or what they claim. I guess that's why that after 24 years of driving, I have never had any oil related problems.

Sometimes 2nd best is better, expecially when it cost 3 times LESS!

Amsoil vs. 5 QT Mobil1 for $19.95 vs. Amsoil
IP: Logged

Message:

Mobil1 is a FINE PRODUCT ... but they use a misleading advertisment slogan ... "Nothing Outperforms Mobil1" ... and $19.95 per 5-quart jug is a good purchase if you change your oil every 3000 miles +/- (depending upon driving comditions). Note ... some of their viscosities tend to "shear down" to a lower viscosity ... so don't extend your drains.

If you were to switch to Amsoil, you SHOULD notice: an increase in engine performance, better MPG and engine smoothness, longer engine life, ... AND you will help "Save The Environment" by using less oil with longer or "extended" oil change intervals.

Amsoil is #1 in Extended Drain Capabilities

Amsoil IS NOT twice the price if you extend your oil drain intervals. Amsoil is actually less expensive.

It was recently published that AMERICAN automotive manufacturers will be recommending extended drain intervals of up to 15,000 miles in the near future because that's what consumers want and superior synthetic oils allow for it.

Drain Intervals in Europe and Asia are already approximately 15,000 miles. Why? Oil Standards in Europe and Asia are higher than here in the U.S.

AMSOIL Synthetic Oil surpasses the North American AAMA, Japanese JASO and European ACEA oil specifications for high temperature/high shear viscosity protection.

The Industry "norm" or "standard" here in the U.S, is to sell an inferior oil and tell the customer to change his oil every 3,000 miles.

AMSOIL INC. takes pride in never having conformed to industry "norms" or "standards" when those standards are contrary to peak performance. We introduced synthetics to the automotive world in 1972 with the first synthetic motor oil to exceed API performance specifications. At that time other manufacturers refused to recognize the superior performance of synthetic motor oils. Now, however, most companies sell synthetic lubricants, vehicles are factory filled with synthetic motor oils and gear lubes, and some manufacturers even offer extended warranties if you use synthetics. AMSOIL has always offered extended drain intervals because the oil was capable of performing for extended drains, and it was the right thing to do for the consumer. Now the entire industry is moving in that direction.

To save money buying Amsoil, you can become a preferred customer. Also, you can "Pool" your orders with friends and family (like I do) to make it more cost effective.

Extended Oil Drains Save $$$ and The Environment

With Amsoil ... 10,000 mile oil changes are absolutely possible. Up to a 25,000 mile interval is possible under certain conditions, but please read further for additional information.

But the KEY here is that --- The 3,000 mile recommendation is overkill, especially with superior synthetic oils.

Amsoil has been in the oil industry for 30 years. Due to Amsoil's superior synthetic composition and advanced performance additives, AMSOIL performs much longer than do conventional petroleum and other synthetic motor oils.

No other major oil manufacturer matches AMSOIL's 25,000-mile or one-year drain interval recommendations (whichever comes FIRST, changing the filter every six months).

Redline Oil recently wrote an article that SUPPORTS Amsoils claims of 25k miles between oil changes. Repeat, SUPPORTS the FACT that some synthetics are capable of 25k miles between changes. Are you a believer in Redline? If so you have to respect their POSITIVE position on EXTENDED DRAINS. Of course Redline also stated NOT to extend drains using their oils.

Note: The 25,000 mile /1 year that is on the back of an Amsoil bottle is NOT an absolute! One must realize that is for non-severe service (highway miles where you have stable operating conditions) and that the indicated drain interval also has a time period of 1 year maximum as well.

***** READ THIS PLEASE EVERYONE *****

Under a combination of city and highway circumstances, AMSOIL recommends up to 2 or 3 times longer oil change intervals, which means up to 2 or 3 times the equipment manufacturer's recommendation (If your owners manual states 3k miles , then you can change at 9k, and if your owners manual states 5k then 12-15k changes would be alright based on driving habits ... the harder you drive, the sooner the change). Proper filtration is also very important. AMSOIL SDF Oil Filters must be changed at least every 6 months regardless of miles driven.

Notice: Modifications to engine will change service intervals.

Notice: More frequent service may be required under severe service operating conditions.

AMSOIL --- 30 years of manufacturing oil and mountains of data and tests make these clains possible.

Amsoil vs. 5 QT Mobil1 for $19.95 - Oil Filters
IP: Logged

Message:

Filter Recommendations.

Yes TexasTodd, SuperTech makes probably the best (inexpensive) filter for the money.

The better $5 filter, Bosch Super Premium or Wix. Reasons: Top notch construction, good filtering, and good flow. (The PureOne is in this price range too, but I've got issues with restricted flow in the PureOne because of the densely packed media.)

And if $7 (preferred customer price) is your budget, Amsoil SDF oil filters. Amsoil Super Duty Oil Filters (SDF) offer all-around better filtration and protection than conventional filters. Full flow design for extended drain intervals and severe service. Our filters contain a high-tech blended filtration media composed of cellulose, synthetic and glass fibers. The media sets the Super Duty apart from conventional filters in capacity, efficiency and service life, delivering superior filtration and protection.

The Mobil1 Oil Filter is a pretty flow-restrictive filter. Mobil1 filters are possibly matched to Mobil1 oil due to the thinner nature of Mobil1 oil (see earlier posts Amsoil vs. Mobil1 on the General Board). Bottom Line --- I would not use the Mobil1 filters with other oils unless I knew they were on the thin side of the viscosity range.

Amsoil Super Duty Oil Filters

The AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filter (SDF) is designed to provide maximum filtration while meeting the high flow demands of modern automobiles. The AMSOIL SDF contains a special cellulose, synthetic and glass blend media that offers the best possible balance of long life, high capacity and overall efficiency.

The AMSOIL SDF has a lofted fiber depth-type media that traps dirt throughout its entire thickness for exceptional filtering efficiency. It keeps oil clean and free of wear-causing contaminants.

The AMSOIL SDF has a heavy-duty case of drawn steel. The case is double-crimped at the base with rolled-under seaming to withstand extreme pressure surges and road shocks.

The AMSOIL SDF has an anti-drainback valve that keeps trapped contaminants in the filter when the engine is not running.

BigBlueQC,
I'm sure you can find it cheaper, but the 2 places that cary Amsoil where I live both sell it for $9.99 per quart. My 4.7L holds 6qts. That's $60.00 for the oil. Then a decent oil filter like a Wix or a Bosch cost $5.00. Sales tax where I'm at is $0.09 on the dollar (below average). $60.00 + 5.00 +5.85 tax = $70.85

If your going to put oil in there that's $10.00 a quart then you aren't going to chaep out on the filter. You would probably get a K&N and theres another 4 or 5 bucks. That gets you up over $75.00 for an oil change.

Fortunately, my other 3 cars don't hold but 4 and 5 quarts. My R/T is one of those. I change the oil in it every 3 months which averages 2000 miles in that length of time. My 4.7L gets the oil changed sometimes in 3 weeks because I can easily put a 1000 miles a week on it. I would go broke putting Amsoil in that thing. I've considered going to a cheaper synthetic than Mobil 1, but since WalMart always puts it on sale at least once a year for less than $18.00 for a 5qt container, I just stick with Mobil. I'll sometimes buy 7-10 at a time when WalMart puts them on sale.

I have gotten 5w30 Mobil1 for as low as 15.99 a 5qt container at WalMart.

Amsoil guy,
I'm aware of the viscosity break down on Mobil1. At around 3500 miles, my gas mileage will jump up about 1.5-2.5 miles per gallon. It will do it every time on my 4.7L. I figure that is when the viscosity is breaking down. I make sure I change the oil prior to that time.

Amsoil Retail Pricing vs. Mobil1
IP: Logged

Message:

The most common oil recommendation for Dakota's is:

Amsoil SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil

(1) quart bottle - $5.85 (Retail)

(1) gallon bottle - $22.80 (Retail)

(12) quart bottles - $69.00 (Retail)

If you see this oil for $9.99 a quart, the retailer is overcharging.

You said "I would not use the Mobil 1 filters with other oils unless I knew they were on the thin side of the viscosity range."

What????????

The last time I bought my Mobil 1 0w-40, I also saw 0w-20; 5w-30; 10w-30; 15w-50.

The last time I bought my mobil 1 filter, I did NOT see any reference about using the filter with only 0w-20 and NOT 15w-50.

If what you said had a single shred of truth, then Mobil would make different filters for their different weights of oil.

They would have to make many different kinds of the same part # of filter, because that same # filter fits many different engines that all require different grades of oil.

Had you have said that "Mobil 1 filters are POSSIBLY more restrictive to flow because of their superior filtering capabilities than other filters". That would be one thing.

But to say that you can only use Mobil 1 filters with Mobil 1 oil due to its thin viscosity make up is absurd.

All those guys using Mobil 1 15w-50 and a Mobil 1 filter are in alot of trouble.......Right??

If I could find 12 quarts for $69.00 I would jump on it. I could stretch my oil change intervals to 5-6K and come out way ahead. I used to do the
5-6K interval changes on the Mobil 1, but I kept noticing the dramatic increase in fuel mileage at 3500 miles. This happened every time, so I concluded the Mobil 1 was loosing viscosity at that point and I went back to 3k intervals. If I could get 5w30 Amsoil for $69.00/12qts I would would do it in a heart beat.

These are privately owned speed shops I do business with. No one else around here caries any Amsoil. They do over charge.

be sure you are comparing prices on the same oil.
Amsoil has a few different sythetic motor oils:
Series 2000 synthetic
XL-7500 synthetic
one listed just as 100% synthetic
one listed as high performance synthetic
and more

I just bought 6 quarts of series 2000 0w-30 and two filters for $60. I should have bought another quart Doh!

I never heard of the prefered customer discount before now. I searched this forum and sure enough there was the Amsoil Guy's post explaining how it works. It has my curriosity going. I would like to upgrade my oil.

I'm not sure if it's the engines fault or the Mobil 1's fault. I've never noticed the viscosity break down of the Mobil 1 until I bought a 4.7L Dak. It has got me concerned about both.

I will try the Amsoil just to see if the viscosity problem goes away. If it does, I might be selling the 4.7L and I may become the next Amsoil lover.

Daryl,

You are quoting "starting" viscosity grades. Some oils do not retain their starting grades throughout the drain interval. That is one of the determining factors of a SUPERIOR Synthetic vs. a BASIC Synthetic.
