Subject: Front diff cover IP: Logged
Message: How hard is it to change the oil in the front diff on a 2001 Dakota? Is there enough clearance to remove the diff cover? Looks awful close.

Message: I have a 1999 4x4 V8 that I changed the fluid in both differentials recently and the front is close, one bolt is hard to get a socket on,might need a swivel. One trick I learned was when placing cover back on place a small wooden dowel rod, about 1" long in one hole on each side of pumpkin in order to line up the cover with the holes. Black RTV sealant is fine instead of a gasket.

Message: Like daniel said above, the cover does come off, with very little room left over. I have an 02 and changed the diff lube last fall. I didn't do the dowel thing, but I found it was much easier to put the RTV or RightStuff on the pumpkin instead of the cover. The cover will need to rub the diff gear carrier, or get very close to it, to get aligned, so I figured putting the sealant on the pumpkin would minimize the screaming, cussing, and bitching that would be required the other way...
