I've got a 98 5.2L 4x4. My CEL has been intermitently on/off for a year. Ive done alot to turn it off nothing works though(plugs, wires, cap, rotor, ias module). Every time I get the codes pulled it said #2 miss at idle(4 different times). Does anyone have any suggestions?

Could be vacuum leak.Intake gasket?-hose down edges of intake/vac. lines with carb cleaner.
If idle changes you have a leak.

Bad injector?

Does it run poorly?

If not,simply put a picture of a loved one over the light and have no worries until emission test time.

It has a rough idle. I was told that alot of the time 5.2's have a problem with valve guides going bad. I will try the carb cleaner trick tommorow and will reply.

Can anyone else think of a possible problem? Do Autolite plugs, wires, cap, and rotor have anything to do with it? I have an emision test in 2 months!!!

When it misfires, is it audible to you? Do you know if it misfires at idle, acceleration, cruise or wot? If you haven't replaced the plug for #2 since the last misfire, pull it and see that cylinder is running rich, lean, wet or oily. If the plug looks like it should for normal usage, I would then swap the #2 injector, say with the #3 injector, and see if misfire occurs in #3 ... trying to see if the problem is with a specific injector.

Other possible areas: condition or usage length of your pre-cat O2 sensor, fuel synch might be off a bit.
