Subject: Truck shakes IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99" DAK 4+4, i have a shake when i drive at almost any speed. I have 33"s and a 3" body lift, the tires are balanced the front end was aligned just before the lift was put on. I have noticed when the weather is cold, my truck feels like there is a flat spot in the tires. I had this with my 31"s but thought it was the set of cheap tires i bought ( $89.00 mount and bal. each ). My 33"s do the sane thing ( Dunlop RV's ). I live in Ohio so the weather does get a bit cold. I hope someone has an answer to my ongoing problen.

Message: john-r,
I've never owned a set of tires that didn't do what your describing. Are you referring to the low speed wobble you get after the truck sets overnight in cold weather? That's just the tires. Rubber and steel have a tendency to "set" and retain that "set" when they are parked hot and then cool off overnight in cold weather. It should go away once the tires heat up. Does it not? If it does go away after a few miles I wouldn't worry about it. Try a set of Goodyear wranglers. They will make you think something is broke. That's what all our HMMV's had.

Message: Donkey,
The whole truck shakes. But i realy don't feel it in the stearing wheel, just in the ass. It feels like those old work out machines back in the (40's-50's), that people would put that belt around there midsection, that would shake you from side to side. That is about the best way for me to describe it.
WipLash,
This is the first time i have ever had this problem with any tires or auto. I had a 91' Jeep Wrangler, bought it new, put a suspension lift and BF Goodrich 33"s on it for 8 yrs and 3 sets later without a problem. I still live in the same place then as i do now. This is why i am having a hard time with this problem. If i had to, i will take it to a shop. Don't want to but might have to. Thanks for your advice.

Message: When I had my Mustang, I had a tire start to seperate, and it did the shakes like you describe. Since you don't feel it on the steering wheel, maybe one of the rear tires is seperating? its just a guess. You could jack up the rear and spin the tire by hand and look at the tire width ways, and around where the tire would make contact with the ground. If you see the tire 'bobbing' in a certain spot, then that could be your problem. Again, it is just a guess.

Message: Hello john-r from another John R.! I don't know the complete details of the shakes you are experiencing, but one possibility is the U-joints. IF they are going, often you will experience a shake coming from the back end.

Message: When I had a vibration in my steering wheel checked out the guy said something along the lines of if you feel a problem in the steering wheel, it's a front tire or wheel or alignment problem, if you feel it in your seat it's a rear wheel or drive shaft issue

Message: Like Floatpilot said, seperation is something to consider if it is really bad. If that's the case it should never go away after it warms up. I may have missunderstood, but it was my impression that the problem went away after the tires heated up. My R/T does it with the 255/55/17's, but you have to be on real smooth asphault and idle in 1st gear to notice it. The ass end wiggles like you described. Once my tires heat up it goes away. My steering wheel also jiggles until the tires have had time to heat up. I also have other problems with my front end that makes the tire problem more noticeable. I'm replacing the front bearing hub assemblies Easter weekend for starters. Then I have to get an alignment.
Back in the 60's and 70's many tire shops like Firestone had a tire shaver. For a few extra bucks, they would shave your tires to get them perfectly round before balancing them. No one does this anymore. It got rid of the wobbles.

Message: Thanks, i will look into it. I live 10 min. from the Goodyear plant in Akron Ohio, i will call them and ask if they will shave the tires. Can't hurt to ask.

Message: I don't know of anybody that still has a tire shaver. They do it on the high-end (expensive) go cart classes. I don't know where they get them shaved at.
