Message: One other thing to consider is how the people are putting your wheels on. Almost all places use impact wrenches to put the wheels on. This will put uneven pressure on the wheel/rotor. As you heat up the rotor it will warp due to the uneven pressure. If you go slow and go through the pattern 3-4 times as you tighten the lugs and use a good torque wrench, you are much less likely to warp the rotors. This was the fix on one of my other cars. If this means you have to stand there and watch the guy put your wheels on when you get new tires them so be it. I always watch them, or they will use the imact.

Message: I actually suggested this last time I was in for service, the guy behind the desk got an attitude and was like 'Uhh, I think he knows that, he's only been doing this for 20 years." And Im like "well obviously he might not considering I just had my front rotors replaced at 7900 miles.

Message: BOth warped and later pitted rotors, warped at 18K, pitted at 24K. On the recomendation of my mechanic who has seen many rotor problems with Dakotas, I put on softer pads with less metal. He claims this will help increase the life, he says high metal content and ceramic pads will lessen rotor life, he also say the brakes are too small for the Dakotas weight, and that Dakotas rear brakes go ut of adjustment easily leading to mor work with the fronts. I'll see how the softer compound does.

Message: I understand about the impact and the lugs. Last time I did the front brakes on my 99 I had to use a breaker bar and a 2lb hammer to get the lugs off. My garage impact had 160lbs of pressure on the line and still couldnt break off the lugs. Now, I know that the garages are trying to cover their a$$ from tires falling off etc...But I mean "how much pressure are they putting into their guns?" I actually had to replace a lug last time because I twisted it before it broke lose enough for me to get it off. I really couldnt believe my eyes when I saw the twisted lug and didnt break a stem.

Message: This has been standard practice for good mechanics ever since disc brakes became commonly available in the 60's. Lug nuts must be torqued evenly, to specified torque values, and in the correct criss-cross pattern. Otherwise, we all know what happens. The average guy at the average tire shop doesn't bother to do this.
Whenever I bring one of my vehicles back from the tire or alignment shop, I go around and loosen all the lug nuts about 1/2 turn in the correct pattern. Then I retorque them with a torque wrench in the correct pattern.
I just finished rotating my tires on my 2001 4x4 QC. Lug torque is 90 ft/lbs all around. There is plenty of brake pad left. Disc run out is <0.0015" inside and out. Ball joints and front suspension are tight. The truck has about 49K miles on it.

Message: Just had another set of rotors turned, I was on the Interstate rolling about 80 when a Truck cut off a minivan and the minivan cut me off. the minivan was only rolling about 45. Anti-Lock brakes worked excellent, the pulsations were a bit rough though.
Couple of questions...
What are the softest pads available from either Advance auto, Auto Zone,or NAPA?
What is the correct pattern to tighten the lugs and the correct torque?
Thanks!

Message: tighten lugs in a star pattern if using air tools get&use the correct "tirque stick" for your vehicle , it is a socket on a necked down extension that flexes and does not overtorque studs

Message: BDak,
I have always purchased the soft pads. I always have had my rotors warp by 5K and by 10K they have always been undriveable.
The last time I went to AutoZone they were sold out of the soft pads and it was closing time. They had the Carbon Metalics in stock. I purchased the C/M and put them on 9,500 miles ago. The rotors have not warped yet. I have even started driving more agressively now that I'm more confident about my rotors. The rotors are wearing thinner more rapidly, BUT they have not warped YET!! This is the longest I've ever gone without warping a rotor on a Dodge Dakota.

I have been wondering about the C/M pads for years now, but have never tried them on any vehicle.
How about the ceramic pads? How do they perform?

Actually, I was going to try the ceramics, but I do things spur of the moment and no one ever has them in stock when I deside to do a brake job.....
I've read where they don't perform as good as the C/M's, but they perform better than stock pads. I wanted them because they claim to not leave any brake dust.
Also, with the C/M's installed, most of the wear I have noticed is on the drivers front. That just happens to be the side that the wheel bearing is going out on. The passenger front rotor has a minor amount of wear on it. I think my wheel hub flopping around is what is causing the extra wear on the left front rotor. I will be fixing that this weekend.

Pretty sad that the rotors have warped so often that I have two sets. LoL

Message: Just bought an '02 Dak QC with brand new PA inspection on it. I was checking and cleaning the brakes as I do as a normal routine. I discovered the passenger side rotor inside face has a rusty pitted groove all the way around about the size of a dime. I think this is why the brakes were pulsing/making noises? What's up with this ugly groove? I've been doing my own brakes for 30 years; never saw anything like it. It almost looks like it rusted through the face in the center...Cheap Chrysler rotors coming apart, perhaps? The good news was that a replacement Wearever brand rotor was only $25.

Message: Redline,
You didn't mention how many miles where on the truck. Assuming 15k per year you probably have over 30k on that used truck. I have personally wore the pads all the way through to the rivets in under 20K. It appears the prior owner let the pads wear down too thin and either a rivet or the metal backing got into the rotor. Then they put a set of cheapos on there so they could sell/trade it in. I've done that also.

Message: Ok, I will be the guinea pig. :-)
I just bought a set of ProStop Ceramic pads.
They seem to be very soft. I could push my thumb nail into the top corner of the pad. They also seem to have some small diameter copper wire impregnatation.
i will report back with some results.

Message: WipLash: No, 24k on the truck. The bonded pads still have 5/32 on them. This isn't a metal-on-metal type of groove. It looks more like a metal coating wore through to a cast metal underneath. There was an uneven appearence to it and some flaking in the groove. There was a matching groove in the center of the pad. Perhaps there was a defect in the pad or something. If no one else has seen it on their Dodges, I'll assume it was an anomly.

Message: Just wanted to add my two cents to this post.
I have a 2000 Dakota Sport 4x4. I'm up to almost 80K miles and I've lost track of the rotors I've replaced. Probably 5 sets, I have two sets that I just get turned and then swap out until they can't be turned any more. My wife got in a wreck in my truck where she rear ended someone, I blame that on the quality breaks too.
I was also lucky enough to have the upper ball joint problem so many other Dakota's and Durango's have had. The guys at the dealership said they have done so many they had the part number memorized! I still couldn't get them replaced for free since it happened after 50K, but did get them to pay 50%.
Not real happy with the problems, bummer because it's really a great truck....

Message: i have an 01' dakota awith 74,000 mi on it. ii just replaced pads and rotors on it this past saturday. my rotors were on so good, i also had to use a mini sledge hammer to get them off.
here's my question.... i used a 4-way to put the lugs on in the star pattern as was mentioned above. i tighten them as tight as i can, is this ok, or is there a certain tightness they should be??
