Subject: Hey Amsoil Guy!
IP: Logged

Message:
I am thinking of switching to your product, but I have a question. I have a QC 4.7 L with 60,000 miles and I am thinking of changing to your motor oil first. I am the second owner and I have run synthetic blends in the truck. I have seen posts on this site about not changing to synthetics after a certain mileage. Is this statement true? Can I change to the synthetic and not get leaks? Also, about what would 6 quarts cost me.
Sorry about the long post. Thanks.

First, What year is your Dakota and I will post particular information for your vehicle, and get back to you with price information.

Second, to answer your concern,

Q. I sometimes hear "Synthetic oils contain detergents that can make the oil seals leak in older cars." Is this really an issue? How old would a car have to be to not use synthetics?

A. Synthetic lubricants do have an inherent detergency that cleans and removes conventional motor oil deposits (sometimes referred to as crud) left over in an engine. However, ALL motor oils are designed to help swell seals slightly to prevent leakage. The only time you would observe seal leakage is if the seals are already damaged or showing signs of leakage around them. As long as the vehicle has been well maintained, and in good mechanical condition, it can be switched to a synthetic lubricant at any mileage.

Any seal leakage when switching from conventional "dino" to synthetic in higher mileage vehicles is usually due to the fact that the seals were already damaged and simply filled with "crud". True - the detergency in synthetics cleaned the sludge --- and the problem (which already existed) becomes evident. This is mostly in much older vehicles since seal materials are better in modern engines.

__________________________________________________

Let's put to bed some of the other objections you will hear concerning the use of synthetic engine lubricants (some are old debates ... some are new). Most of these myths have long been put to bed since other oil companies are now offering synthetics.

Myth #1: Synthetic motor oils damage seals.

Untrue. It would be foolhardy for lubricant manufacturers to build a product that is incompatible with seals. The composition of seals presents problems that both petroleum oils and synthetics must overcome. Made from elastomers, seals are inherently difficult to standardize. Ultimately it is the additive mix in the oil that counts. Additives to control seal swell, shrinkage and hardening are required, whether it be a synthetic or petroleum product that is being produced.

Myth #2: Synthetics are too thin to stay in the engine.

Untrue. In order for a lubricant to be classified in any SAE grade (10W-30, 10W-40, etc) it has to meet certain guidelines with regard to viscosity ("thickness"). For example, it makes no difference whether it is 10W-40 petroleum or 10W-40 synthetic, at -25 degrees centigrade (-13F) and 100 degrees centigrade (212 degrees F) that oil has to maintain a standardized viscosity or it can't be rated a 10W-40.

Myth #3: Synthetics cause cars to use more oil.

Untrue. Synthetic motor oils are intended to use in mechanically sound engines, that is, engines that don't leak. In such engines oil consumption will actually be reduced. First, because of the lower volatility of synlubes. Second, because of the better sealing characteristics between piston rings and cylinder walls. And finally, because of the superior oxidation stability (i.e. resistance of synthetics against reacting with oxygen at high temperatures.)

Myth #4: Synthetic lubricants are not compatible with petroleum.

Untrue. The synthesized hydrocarbons, polyalphaolefins, diesters and other materials that form the base stocks of high quality name brand synthetics are fully compatible with petroleum oils. In the old days, some companies used untested ingredients that were not compatible, causing quality synthetic lubricants to suffer a bad reputation. Fortunately, those days are long gone. Compatibility is something to keep in mind, however, whether using petroleum oils or synthetics. It is usually best to use the same oil for topping off that you have been running in the engine. That is, it is preferable to not mix your oils, even if it is Valvoline or Quaker State you are using. The reason is this: the functions of additives blended for specific characteristics can be offset when oils with different additive packages are put together. For optimal performance, it is better to use the same oil throughout.

Myth #5: Synthetic lubricants produce sludge

Untrue. In point of fact, synthetic motor oils are more sludge resistant than their petroleum counterparts, resisting the effects of high temperatures and oxidation. In the presence of high temperatures, two things happen. First, an oil's lighter ingredients boil off, making the oil thicker. Second, many of the complex chemicals found naturally in petroleum base stocks begin to react with each other, forming sludge, gums and varnishes. One result is a loss of fluidity at low temperatures, slowing the timely flow of oil to the engine for vital engine protection. Further negative effects of thickened oil include the restriction of oil flow to critical areas, greater wear and loss of fuel economy. Because of their higher flash points, and their ability to withstand evaporation loss and oxidation, synthetics are much more resistant to sludge development.

Myth #6: Synthetics can't be used with catalytic converters or oxygen sensors.

Untrue. In fact the very low ash content of synthetics will extend the life of every exhaust system component.

Myth #7: Synthetics void warranties.

Untrue. No major manufacturer of automobiles specifically bans the use of synthetic lubricants. In point of fact, increasing numbers of high performance cars are arriving on the showroom floors with synthetic motor oils as factory fill. Which may not make the dealers too happy since oil changes usually lead to other service work.

Myth #8: Synthetics last forever.

Untrue. Although some experts feel that synthetic base stocks themselves can be used forever, it is well known that eventually the additives will falter and cause the oil to require changing. However, by "topping off", additives can be replenished. Through good filtration and periodic oil analysis, synthetic motor oils protect an engine for lengths of time far beyond the capability of non synthetics. Amsoil's unique additives packages allow for extended drain intervals.

Myth #9: Synthetics are too expensive.

Untrue. Tests and experience have proven that synthetics can greatly extend drain intervals, provide better fuel economy, reduce engine wear and enable vehicles to operate with greater reliability. All these elements combine to make synthetic engine lubricants more economical than conventional non synthetics. In Europe, synthetics have enjoyed increasing acceptance as car buyers look first to performance and long term value rather than initial price. As more sophisticated technology places greater demands on today's motor oils, we will no doubt see an increasing re-evaluation of oil buying habits in this country as well.

There are other MYTHS and non-truths circulating the forums, garages, and race tracks. The nine above are just a few that I wanted to address.

Conclusion

Since their inception, manufacturers of synthetic motor oils have sought to educate the public about the facts regarding synthetics, and the need for consumers to make their lubrication purchasing decisions based on quality rather than price. As was the case with microwave ovens or electric lights, a highly technological improvement must often overcome a fair amount of public skepticism and consumer inertia before it is embraced by the general population. But the word has been getting out as a growing number of motorists worldwide experience the benefits of synthetic lubrication. The wave of the future, in automobile lubrication, is here, and Amsoil has lead the march, recently celebrating their 30th year in business. For the environmental enthusiasts, the use of synthetics could reduce waste oil disposal by 80%, so if environment is your thing, then synthetic lubricants should be your choice.
--------------------------------------------------

AMSOIL lubricants are all tested for seal compatibility with all the seal materials in use with industry accepted testing methods. AMSOIL Products will not damage seals or be more prone to leaking than petroleum products when used in vehicles with undamaged seals. Unfortunately, high mileage vehicles and equipment that have been using petroleum lubricants for long periods of time face the risk that sludge and deposits have built up in the engine and created a false seal, and the seal itself has dried out and cracked or shrunk. Lubricants help condition seals, keeping them supple and slightly swelled to insure a proper seal with no leaks. When covered with sludge or deposits, the seal will deteriorate. Now you start using AMSOIL motor oil with it’s high quality additive package and natural detergency, and you start to clean up the engine. The false seal is cleaned away, and if the seal itself has become cracked or damaged, a leak will develop. The same thing occurs in transmissions and differentials. Because of this, many people think that synthetic oil is more prone to leaking, when all it really is doing is revealing the problem that petroleum oil deposits had created and kept hidden. Once the damaged seals are properly replaced, keep using the synthetic oil and they won’t leak again.

I changed to Mobil 1 at 60K when I bought my 2000 4.7 Dak and it's running great at 118K, no oil leaks or oil consumption at all.

When I bought the truck it used a little oil, (oh great) but after running Mobil 1 for about 3K it stopped using oil. I guess it had a stuck ring causing the oil consumption. I was surprised that the synthetic oil cured the oil consumption.

I run Amsoil ATF in the trans and power steering, it's and excellent product. I flushed the trans and P/S at 80K and after 30-40K the fluid still looks great.

I was skeptical, but I went ahead and changed the rear end lube 3 weeks ago and since then my rear end has quit chattering. Is this a fluke? Or, did they tell me the truth?

This question is about myth number #7 on synthetics voiding warranties. I'm coming up on the first oil change for my 2004 4.7 Dakota CC and I'm thinking of trying Amsoil. In paging through the several topics there is almost always mention of extended oil change intervals. Assuming that I could double or triple my oil change interval and if I did, wouldn't this void the warranty?

Disconnected,

Warranty issues.

Will AMSOIL Motor Oils void the warranty of a new vehicle?

Absolutely not! Manufacturers’ warranties are based upon the use of oils meeting specific API Service Classifications, for example, SJ/CF. AMSOIL lubricants meet the current API Service requirements and, thus, are perfectly suited for use in any new vehicle without affecting the validity of the new vehicle warranty. ALL Amsoil oils exceed the very minimal API performance specifications.

The oil change interval in your manual is a recommendation. But I am always cautious to recommend to someone that they go against their manual.

Up until a couple of years ago Amsoil only made extended drain lubricants and Dealerships would not carry the oil. One, it was too expensive, and the other -- dealerships said it would void the warranty because of the extended drains.

Since the Amsoil XL-7500 was introduced, you are seeing more Amsoil in Dealerships. The XL-7500 is a Group III Hydrocracked Synthetic and full API.

It does take some expertise to sell Amsoil. From the "higher price than Mobil1", to the fear of extended drains. Face to face is really the best way the product will sell.

I've dealt with Amsoil and service managers at dealerships for many years. The only concern you will EVER have with a service manager regarding Amsoil is that you follow the manufacturers recommended service intervals while the vehicle is under warranty.

If you have an engine failure with Amsoil while following manufacturers recommended drain intervals, it will be for one of three reasons:

1) There is a design defect in that particular engine - in that case it will affect hundreds if not thousands of engines and there will be some sort of recall program.

2) You allow the oil level to get several quarts low and it overheats

3) There is some sort of abnormal contamination from coolant, fuel or dirt - any of which will clearly show up in a $20.00 oil analysis.

DODGE DEALERSHIPS NOW CARRY AMSOIL !!!

This was posted by Sephiroth 3/20/2004
V8 Forum --- Subject: New Chrysler Product?!

Message posted by Sephiroth:

"I went in to have my brakes checked today, and when I walked into the garage the first thing I saw made my jaw hit the floor. My local dealership now uses and sells AMSOIL products!! They've got it posted on a big banner over the service-desks. GM may not have been able to get it for their 'vettes, but obviously Dodge was able to, or they found out how awesome it is and started buying at regular price! When I go in for a tranny-filter, fluid, and gasket change next week, it's getting filled with AMS."

Sephiroth went on to state:

"This is at the Raleigh, NC dealership, Al Smith Buick, Dodge, Mazda. I told the guy at the desk I was astounded to see them using AMS and that I had been using it for a while now. After he rode in the truck he said he'd be switching next oil-change in his Ram.

As for me, I've got it in the engine, and I'll have it in the tranny soon! Next up are the differentials. After that I need to get a dyno just for curiosity's sake. IF I get 3-5hp form the differential, and God knows how much from the engine and tranny, that'll be enough without any heavy mods. Well, for all I do anyway. If it is a significant gain, I'll post the results."

Dodge Dealerships are beginning to realize that Amsoil offers a FULL LINE of Premium Synthetic Lubricants and Dodge Dealerships are beginning to offer Amsoil.

Why ...

1) Dodge knows Amsoil meets AND exceeds Dodge's requirements.
2) Because their customers are asking for Amsoil.
3) Amsoil = 30 Year History of Research and Development
4) Amsoil offers the best Synthetic Lubricants

Anyone know of any other Dodge Dealerships offering Amsoil?

Current Amsoil Prices, as of September 2004

For most Dakotas, Amsoil recommends either Amsoil SAE 5w-30, 10w-30, or Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 Synthetic Motor Oil.

The most common oil recommendation for the Dodge Dakota is:

Amsoil SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil

(1) quart bottle - $5.85 (Retail)

(1) gallon bottle - $22.80 (Retail)

(12) quart bottles - $69.00 (Retail)

Amsoil Preferred Customer (wholesale) price is $4.55 per quart ... more than 20% savings and that is typical across the board. This is the oil that I use and often recommend for the Dodge Dakota.

The following is Amsoil's most expensive oil.

This is also recommended for the Dodge Dakota, however this is NOT the one I usually recommend which I will explain later in this post.

Amsoil SERIES 2000 - SAE 0W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil

(1) quart bottle - $8.35 (Retail)

(1) gallon bottle - $31.55 (Retail)

(12) quart bottles - $99.00 (Retail)

Again ... if you choose this oil ... Amsoil Preferred Customer Pricing is a lot less!

Either oil is recommended for most Dakotas.

Amsoil SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oils are excellent oils and have shown to be almost the same quality as the Series 2000. Most visitors to this site know how I feel about Amsoil Series 2000. IMHO ... Amsoil 10w-30 gives you the best bang for $$$, and it is the oil I use.

__________________________________________________

Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 is the more shear stable of the two Amsoil formulations (SAE vs. Series 2000). The Series 2000 also reduces friction (better gas mileage -- fuel savings of approx 2%-3% in comparison to the 10w-30 in short trip driving), protects from heat and wear better, better engine cleanliness than the 5w-30 and 10w-30 due to higher detergency, better cold weather performance --- in any high performance application, --- and will provide the lowest oil consumption in older vehicles that are experiencing oil consumption problems.

Special note: Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 can be used to in place of 5w-20/5w-30/10w-30 oils. I'd even recommend it in engines that come with 0w-40 or 5w-40 grades.

Either oil is fine. I use the less pricey of the two. If you drive your truck "hard" --- you might be happier with your choice of the Series 2000.
