Message: if it was it would not come out as an '05 like it is schedualed because it just plain takes too long to design and build the body stamping dies. It is April, shut down for model change over usually starts the first week of augest so the skilled trades guys can get all the dies set in the presses and the welding fixtures in place and new assembley tools installed etc. The deis need to be designed then sent out for bid, bids reveiewed, contracts signed, large never in stock at the steel supply houses die steel needs to be ordered the ordered materail delivered to the steel houses that sit on it for a week before delivering, CAd drawings made, CAM tool paths developed, cutting of the dies, that sometimes takes a week just for one station in a multi station progressive stamping die, die steels heat treated, not all heat treaters have a big enough furnace so it has to be shipped a day or more away, heat treated which depending on the size of the steel could take several days, shipped back, inspected, CMM'd. Magnafluxed or what ever for cracks, ground, which can take days ir not weeks, polished, trial fitted, assembled, trial fit upper and lower and slide steels, polish and or grind as required, assembeld in die sets, spacing between stations in the progresive die checked, fit into a tryout press, tried out and adjustments made, shipped to automotive stamping plant, tried and inspected by them, trial assembly of all the parts of all the dies, changes made to dies by die manufactures due to mis fits, returned to auto stamping plants after changes, re-tried, and all parts re-assmbled, finall acceptence of dies, dies finally installed. The same or simular proccess must go into assembly fixtures, robots need to be reprogrammed, All outside vender parts must be trial fitted to a pre productiion assembly of all the parts to make sure they fit, right. Then you gotta train all your skilled trades on how to repair all this new equipement, BEFORE you can ever train the production workers on how to start makin parts and puttin them together for a new model.

Message: He's right though. I worked at a plant that completely retooled. New machines, dies, etc. took 6 months.
