Subject: Factory Lugnuts Suck

Message:
I went to rotate my tires (mostly to go thru the motions and check brakes) on my new (to me) 98 SLT... and I'm glad I did. 2 of the Lugnuts where in bad shape (required special effort), and one of them was completely screwed up... oh, and ALL of them were torqued down WAY too much. Had to go buy one of those nut extractor sockets (has the spiral grooves that bite as they are loosened) and a giant socket to drive it. Went and bought a complete set of new lugnuts with lockers (and a new tire iron to fit them as they are 13/16" instead of 3/4"). Would've sucked really bad if I'd had to change a flat on the side of the road.

Looks like the OEM nugs have a thin metal veneer on them which will slide/distort when removing them, and once they come off, no known socket will fit the core.

that ain't why read the last half of line 3 and the first half of line 4. My 97 has the exact same nuts you have and so far no problems.

How can you blame that on the lug nuts ? I change mine twice a year as I change set ups for the seasons, eight times now. I torque them to 100 lb/ft, never seen one over torque itself; all are still in good shape.
Many manufacturers use that showy veneer - I've seen them fail when abused and always found another socket to fit.
Time to invest in some better tools ? And watch who you let work on your truck ?

I've had the truck a month, and know well enough to use good tools, and how NOT to abuse them or the fasteners they work on....

Problem must have been created by prior owner, or whomever he took this truck to.
