Subject: Lug nut problem...
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello to the forum...

I went to rotate my tires this afternoon (which I haven't done since I had the local auto garage put on four new tires) and ran into a problem. One of the lug nuts looks to have been impacted onto the stud off-center. I tried everything to loosen the nut, but to no avail. Is there any way I can loosen this nut and avoid a trip back to the lug nuts who did this in the first place?

David

You know, I gave a lot of thought about going out on a comedy tour a few years ago, but I decided to be this loser who lost a battle against a heavy duty impact wrench this weekend instead.

But you should see what that lug looks like now. I put a hurtin' on it for sure. In a few days, God willing, that lug will be in the garbage. I'll be the loser no more.

Thanks for the laugh, my friend,

David

David. You can heat it up with a torch and then put a breaker bar on it to loosen it. You may have to jump up and down on it to get it off. Then just replace the damaged lug & nut. Since the tire store messed it up, I would just make them fix it and avoid all the hassle. Most tire shops do free rotating anyway if you bought the tires from them.

That is true timberwolf. But...even if your getting a rotation under warranty and they snap off a stud, they will still try to get you to pay for it. I recently ran into the same thing with my wifes car at NTB. All you have to do is make a really big stink right in the showroom, and "poof". Your problem goes away.

I've had that problem. It was removed with a vice grip, WD40 and lots of muscle power. It'll take a long time as you work out the nut a bit of a time. The stud will be destroyed. Once you get it off and the stud replaced, invest in sets of quality nuts, e.g. McGards.

If the nut is rounded, try pounding a smaller socket onto the nut and take a big breaker bar and remove it. Then your next challenge is getting the nut out of the socket.

This is something I've done in the past when all esls has failed includind going down to a smaller size, I got to a size 19mm to a size 14mm. Take a drill bit and drill the center of the nut and into the stud, deeper is better. remove all the other nuts then pull or pry the wheel off. having drilled the nut and studd will have weakend it enough that a little bit of leverage will snap it right off.

MOTO TOOL!! Go to Wally world and get a 10pak of cut-off wheels for the Moto-tool and cut it off. DO NOT TORCH IT!!! GEEZ! Unless you have steel wheels that you care nothing about do not torch it. If you have Aluminum wheels like 99% of the Dakotas out there have you will screww up the finshes and possibly destroy the wheel while trying to cut the stud off. Aluminum has a very low melting point. It melts at about 800 degrees cooler than steel. The STEEL lug is right up against the ALUMINUM wheel. If the lug gets to 2000 degrees (melting point) the aluminum touching the lug or very close to the lug will also melt. DON'T DO IT!!!

Any do-it-yourselfer worth his salt has a Moto-tool. You do have one? If not, GO BUY ONE!~

DON'T USE A TORCH!!!!! Once you get it off, be patient, it will eventually break free or maybe the stud will just snap, invest in a good torque wrench and do your tire work yourself. Most shops, even the "good" ones use air wrenches and over tighten the wheels. I bet a lot of the front brake pulsation problems on Daks can be attributable to this. Good luck.
