Subject: 96 Dakota Post-Overheating Issues

Message:
Hi there. I have a 1996 Dakota with 238,000 miles. I purchased the truck around 3 or 4 months ago. It's been running really well and I've put quite a few miles on it. I noticed last week that the coolant was low so I refilled everything to the correct levels. That revealed a couple of small holes in the front of the radiator and another leak somewhere in the rear of the radiator as well.

So the radiator is leaking a little, but I wasn't haven't any problems with it yet. I was going to pick up a radiator next week and have it installed.

I went on a 5 mile drive yesterday. I was nearly at my destination and the truck started to lose power. I was being retarded and was not watching the gauges, and I had the radio turned up and therefore did not hear the awful noise that became apparent once I noticed the power loss and turned the radio down. The temperature gauge was totally red lined and the truck was making a loud ticking noise when I pressed the gas pedal.

I obviously pulled off the freeway ASAP. I let the truck cool down for about an hour and then tried to get to civilization so I could try to put some coolant and radiator sealant in so that I could get back to town. I found only coolant at my first stop, so I put that in and tried to get to an actual auto stuff place to get some Stop Leak. I let the truck cool down for about two hours, refilled the radiator and used the stop leak as specified.

I left the auto place, taking it easy and watching the gauges and hoping to make it back home in small jumps. Within 6 blocks of filling the radiator up and going from a cold start, the truck was about to redline again so I pulled over and called AAA to get me and the truck to my shop.

We started the truck once I had it back in town and it will start and run, but it is running VERY rough, much different than it did before! The ticking noise from the original overheat is gone, however.

So obviously I need a radiator, that much is clear. My question is what is the probable cause of the roughness of the ride post-overheat? I am not too familiar with 4 stroke engines so I really don't have a clue what the problem could be. Did I stick a ring? Is it valve related? Is it some computer related nonsense that needs reset when I get the radiator fixed? Is it something else?

Thanks so much, I appreciate your thoughts on this matter...oh, and if anyone is in Richmond VA and knows a good mechanic, all the better.

I really don't want to go into the mechanic blindly not knowing what could be wrong, and I really don't know anything about watercooled engines. Please help me as I am a moron.

Thanks

Within a 5 sec. span, turn key to ON (not Start), OFF, ON, OFF, ON. The Check Engine Lamp in the dash pod will begin blinking 2-digit trouble codes. At the minimum, it will blink on/off 5 times, have a pause, and bling on/off 5 times again. This will be the last code and means "end of code(s)". Write down the 2-digit codes that you get and if you can't find out what they mean, post them to this thread.

I had some work done a few years ago at Patricks Auto Service at the corner of Dickens and Perl Road. He does a very good job but he's kinda expensive. If you live near Chester, Mitchell's Auto Service on Route 10 (near I-295) does good work. Do a compression test first. You may need a new engine. See if you have consistent comp. on all cylinders. Brooks Auto Parts in Oilville or Bruce's auto parts in Mechanicsville are probably your best bets for a decent junkyard engine if you need one. www.carpart.com will also help find an engine if needed.

The ticking noise you were hearing when it was hot was from the tappets and the black water they had in them....formerly known as oil. Your oil pressure will be lousy. That needs changing. That sort of overheat may have warped the heads, possibly blown the head gaskets. Inspect the plugs and look for tell-tale signs of excessive blow-by from weakened rings. If any plugs are fouled, clean them and try it. It may have been a temporary issue due to the heat. However, even if it runs fine, I wouldn't plan on anything serious til the engine was reworked. With that mileage, it won't tolerate as much in the overheat dept.

first of all it is obvious many of you have ever had a seriosly over heated engine. you guys are worried about overheated plugs fouling when in fact heat keeps them from fouling, or warped heads, or gaskets or even a engine code(not likely on the PCM code). the real worries are a Cracked or broken head or block, and probably burned/warped valves-the most likely cause of ruff runnin, plus I can garuntee all the valve stem seals are now rock hard instead of soft and pliable, let alone main bearing seals and valve cover gaskets. most likely she has at least the heads gone. with the milage she has she is already 50,000 beyond where even a well maintained gas engine should be at least torn down and inspected if not fully overhauled. Best thing to do if you really like the truck is to get a '96 or newer same size displacement engine from the junkyard with a lot fewer miles on it. Yeah I know that the 92 and up Magnums are all the same mechanicaly but there might have been some senser changes with the OBDII coming out with the '96 model year same as hers, and that makes the replacement engine a true bolt in/plug and play engine and a relatively easy job for a shade tree guy.

WS-1500, good start, and recommending someone you are familiar with in her area -- a good thing.

Hi; I cam damn close to doing this the other day. Turns out the top seal on the radiator has a leak and since I'm at altitude (denver), it just vented most of the coolant.

Someone above sugested www.carpart.com which wasn't particularly helpfull.

Are there any radiators that are better than stock? Less likely to let loose on me I mean? If this had happened (the top seal letting go) while I was up on the fire trails with my wife, the results would have sucked a lot more.

thanks!

Someone already told you this but I will tell you
again. Cracked head and/or blown head gasket.
Check these out before you spend any money on a
radiator, etc..
