Subject: Squealing again.

Well I've had my truck at the dealership for this a while back and I guess its not fixed. Dealership couldn't find the problem the first few times, finally they concluded it was the front rotors. That made sense, so I had them replaced. This caused the squealing to subside, but not completely. Pads are new too. Here's the problem. After long drives in hot temps (probably cooler temps too, but not as bad) I hear a squealing coming from the front wheels. Braking will stop the squealing and it only does it in motion. The type of squeal sounds more like a bad fan belt than brakes, but the belt has been replaced and you can tell the noise isn't coming from the engine anywhere. Its low front side of the vehicle. It doesn't seem too serious, but it drives me nuts. Any suggestions or experience with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Its probably brake dust between the pad and the rotor. use some brake cleaner.

I'll try the brake cleaner, and post whether or not I get results. Is there any reason my truck would be more prone to brake dust than other vehicles? Jeff, mine will do it with the brake pushed slightly, but as I apply more pressure to the brake, it stops. It also changes pitch or stops when I turn. Thanks for the suggestion rt.

I have the same problem on my 2001 QC. It didnt do it when I first got it. They say everythig looks fine. Yet when I drive it sounds like the pad sensor just touching the rotor. Im thinking of bringing to a real shop have them look at it and tell me whats wrong. Then Ill bring it to dodge and have it done for free. (Thats the plan anyway) I dont care what people say new brakes shouldnt squeek or squeal. Its 2001 and we have fuckin things on mars and my brakes have to squeek. Thats bull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 97 4x4 does the same thing. I got the "money pit" back in Feb and it started doing it in March or so. I bought new brake pads just to find the old ones were nearly 100% new. Sometimes it squeeks, sometimes not, it is speed dependable and goes away at tht slightest touch of the brakes. I've cleaned them and cleaned them, my last thought is its possbily a bearing, but then it would be all the time. AARRGGGGHHH!!!!

Okay some one told me there is a sticky spray you can buy and spray it on the back side of the brake shoes and replace them. I helps to keep them off the roters while you drive. I think ill take my brakes apart this weekend and clean them real good and see if mine still does it. I also wonder if it could be the bang bug shield whistling or something stupid like that.

I don't have a bug sheild, so if its the same problem I'm having, you can count that one out. What bearing, Boomer? That's something I haven't tried and if a bearing heats up and expands or something, that could cause that squeal, couldn't it?

The wheel bearing inside the hub. The problem is (at least with the 4x4) is that they are a solid unit and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire hub assembly. If it is a bearing, it would be constant all the time (again speed variable).

I have a 2002 Dakota and have been alarmed at the brake dust that collects on my wheels between washes so it's interesting to see so many brake squeal concerns in here. I have a squeal that is very loud and clear, happens at all speeds between 30 and 75 and will fade away if I let up or step on the gas. I guess it could be the brake dust issue, but it is very frustrating as it comes and goes and never happpens for the mechanic.

man I have a 00' R/T and the same exact thing happens! I called the dealer where I picked it up and was basically like wtf is up with the brakes, he said they didn't skimp and to take a look so sure enough I pulled the fronts off and they are brand new. It squeels so loud it's embarassing, for sure sounds like metal on metal. My spare money is going into decent pads or something once this gets figured out, I cant stand it. I knew about dust build-up but I thought it was just to maintain performance of the brakes, not keeping them from causing severe noise pollution. I'll be thankful if it's that simple but still a little pissed that I need to babysit them like this. I'll have an answer soon though b/c the dealer tried to stick me with a cracked rim for the spare, they said to take it to dodge and they will pay. I told the guy at the local shop to give her a complete look-over so hopefully he'll be able to enlighten me.
