Message: my 2001 dakota qc 4 x 4, 4.7 starting squeaking a couple weeks or so ago. i've had the truck for a couple months took a shot and bought it used from a dealer. nice, very nice and my first dodge. didn't squeak or squeal when i bought it tho. anyway the brakes squeal, pads, rotors are good, just had them looked at. they sanded them down and secured the pad so they wouldn't move around. still squeal only at a higher pitch. the truck also squeaks like an old gate when i go over a speed bump (we have several here). mechanic says its not the ball joints or much to worry about, but squeaks & squeals are annoying. i was hoping that somebody out there could offer some insight, or if others have found this to be a problem in dakotas. thanks.....

Message: Mine does the same thing. I have a '00 quad cab 4x4. I had new front shocks put on 1 year ago. Shortly afterwards, it started squeeking like a rusty gate when going over bumps, even small ones. I don't know what is causing this. You can hear it when you push down on the front end, but the shocks seem to be operating properly. I also have a grinding, scraping sound that is loud as heck. I'm thinking it's the catalitic converter.

Message: Disc brake squeal is caused by the pads vibrating in the calipers. It's a very common problem. On my '95 Ram I had to fix it every year or so. So far, I have to had the problem with my '01 Dakota.
Remove the calipers from the mounts, and remove the pads from the calipers. Be sure and keep track of where they go. Clean all the mounting surfaces on the pads and the calipers with a wire brush and some brake cleaner. Re-assemble the calipers with some Permatex Disc Brake Quiet - it's sort of like glue. Let the truck sit over night.
As for the front end, check the sway bar end bushings, that's the usual cause. They are poly, so you need to grease them with synthetic lube.

Message: Also while your at it grease your cvs with a needle grease injector. It's a custom make but easy to do. I would have to get more details on the exact homemade design but here is one online: http://automotive.aubuchonhardware.com/engine_lubricants_and_additives/grease_guns/grease_injector_needle-573150.asp
Just keep pumping it until you see something move, this is easist to do with 2 people, one pumps the other sticks and looks for the first sign of movement. My father has found this is the best cheat to not having to replace your cvs and ball joints.

Message: Mine did this awhile back. The dealer replaced the front and rear stabilizer bushings and lubed them with anti-sieze first. the squeak went away and the truck was tight again. The squeak I found before that was the splash guard in the front. The edges were rubbing against the frame under the radiator support. I put tire patches from a tube repair kit and put anti-sieze on the surface. No more squeak or rattle. The only other noise I now have is the creak of the exhaust, more of a click. I can live with that.

Message: Oh yeah! The brake pads in front started to rattle and what was found was that the retainer clips had rotted. they are to reduce rattle, not anything "important". The dealer said we don't warranty brakes but that is not a wear problem it is a manufacturing defect, so they replaced the pads N/C. If your dealer won't replace, you can put anti-squeal gook yourself to acomplish the same thing. It is good to put it even if the clips are replaced.

Message: Every Dakota I have ever seen sqeaks.... I can get mine to stop for a week or two but the bushings, brake mounts... etc. just start again.
