 Subject: Stolen Taigate

The other day I was walking out to my truck and someone stole my tailgate! I was wondering if anyone had any advice or knows someone that will sell theirs. I would like to get it the same color as the truck so I don't have to paint it (Patroit Blue). Thanks for your help.

Sorry about your loss. I don't know anyone selling one, but last weekend I installed an electric tailgate lock on my '00 R/T. It wires into the door locks and works from the door switches or the keyless entry. It was $68.00 at my local truck accessory store and was a breeze to install. Every time I lock the cab, the tailgate locks, too. The make was Pop n Lock, but there are others, like Pace Edwards, that work the same.

How hard is it to get the tailgate off the Daks? It realy sucks that someone would pinch a tailgate.
I know someone who had a tailgate stolen off a mid 80's Ford. All you had to do to get the thing off was to release the support arms and lift the tailgate off. Must have been a 30 second job to get away with the Ford tailgate.

I am pretty sure that it works the same way. There was no scratches or anything on the truck.

I had to take my tailgate off of my dakota (03 r/t). now that I know how it comes off, I could have it off in probably 20 seconds.
basically, open the tailgate, take off the cable supports, hold at about a 45 degree angle, pull up on the passanger side when that comes up, pull that side to the back (out of the way of the side of the truck), then pull the whole thing toward the passenger side to get the driverside to release. That's all that there is to it.

You can also, put a hose clamp, on the pivot side that has the slot in it so it can't be lifted off without removing the hose clamp!
Hose Clamp-Cheap
Putting it on, easy to do, take you a few minutes.
But no thief is going to crawl under your truck to remove the hose clamp, just to get the tailgate off- not in parking lot situations, anyway.
the electric lock is a good idea, especially with a bed cover of some sort.

I went the expensive route and put on a nice fiberglass bed cover which locks over the top of the tailgate. You'd have to smash the cover to get the tailgate open.

I did it the best way!!! Shaved off the damn handle. Relocate that sucker inside the gate, add a locking tonneau, and you're all set!

i have a locking tonneau cover and when it is locked you can not open the tail gate or even get inside the bed. i am also haveing trouble getting the tail gate to latch when i shut it. Sometimes when i shut it, it just falls back open. Has anyone else had this problem and are the latches easy to replace. By the way those power locking tail gates are sweet, my dad has one for his 02 chevy. Its phat.

i think i'll start selling hose clamps on ebay for $13.99 + $5.99 s/h, and call them the Tailgate Security Master 2000XL. "Secure your tailgate and add 5-10hp all with this amazing device! Won't affect your warranty!"

Take the latch out of the side (being careful not to break the plastic clip, then take out the rubber piece, and file it down. I had to do it to mine to get the passenger side to close. The rubber piece was too tall and it wouldn't let the latch go down far enough to "click" and lock.
If you look at it, you should be able to see what I mean

So the way to go is a lock or cap. But does anyone know where I could get a replacement. I check ebay and they have the after market ones but I heard that they are cheap. Anyone have any info? Also how much do you think it will cost to repaint a tailgate? Thanks guys.
