Did you know …

… that the nitromethane-powered engines of NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars produce approximately 8,000 horsepower, about 43 times that of the average street car?

… that one cylinder of the eight cylinders of a Top Fuel dragster or a Funny Car produces 750 horsepower, equaling the entire horsepower output of a NASCAR engine?

… that the gasoline-powered engines of NHRA Pro Stock cars produce about 1,200 horsepower, about eight times that of the average street car?

… that an NHRA Top Fuel dragster accelerates from 0 to 100 mph in less than .8-second, almost 11 seconds quicker than it takes a production Porsche 911 Turbo to reach the same speed?

… that an NHRA Top Fuel dragster leaves the starting line with a force nearly five times that of gravity, the same force of the space shuttle when it leaves the launching pad at Cape Canaveral?

… that an NHRA Funny Car is slowed by a reverse force more than seven times that of gravity when both parachutes deploy simultaneously?

… that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars consume between four and five gallons of fuel during a quarter-mile run, which is equivalent to between 16 and 20 gallons per mile?

… that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars use between 10 and 12 gallons of fuel for a complete pass, including the burnout, backup to the starting line, and quarter-mile run?

… that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars travel the length of more than four football fields in less than five seconds?

… that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters can exceed 280 mph in just 660 feet?

… that from a standing start, NHRA Top Fuel dragsters accelerate faster than a jumbo jet, a fighter jet, and a Formula One race car?

… that a fuel pump for an NHRA Top Fuel dragster and Funny Car delivers 65 gallons of fuel per minute, equivalent to eight bathroom showers running at the same time?

… that the fuel-line pressure for NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars is between 400 and 500 pounds, about 20 times greater than the pressure on passenger-car fuel pumps?

… that depending on size and angle, the large rear wing on an NHRA Top Fuel dragster develops between 4,000 and 8,000 pounds of downforce?

… that the 17-inch rear tires used on NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars wear out after four to six runs, or about two miles? Some brands of passenger-car tires are guaranteed for 80,000 miles.

… that it takes just 15/100ths of a second for all 8,000 horsepower of an NHRA Top Fuel dragster engine to reach the rear wheels?

… that it's desirable for an NHRA Top Fuel dragster to race with its front wheels inches off the ground for about the first 200 feet of the run? This ensures proper weight transfer to the rear wheels, a crucial part of a good launch and quick run.

… that the nitromethane used to power the engines of NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars costs about $30 per gallon?

Drag racing lingo
Breakout: Used only in handicap racing, "breakout" refers to a race car running quicker than the driver has predicted. The driver's prediction is called the dial-in and is posted on the race car. The driver who breaks out loses the race unless his or her opponent has committed a more serious foul, such as a red-light or crossing the centerline of the dragstrip.

Burnout: Spinning the rear tires in water to heat and clean them before a run for better traction. In most classes, a burnout precedes every run down the dragstrip.

Christmas Tree: The noticeable electronic starting device between the lanes on the starting line. It displays a calibrated-light countdown for each driver.

Elapsed Time (e.t.) : The time it takes a drag-race vehicle to travel from the starting line to the finish line.

Funny Car: With aerodynamically enhanced carbon-fiber bodies that loosely resemble the production cars on which they are based, these supercharged, fuel-injected, nitromethane-burning machines travel the quarter-mile in 4.7 seconds at more than 325 mph, slightly slower than a Top Fuel dragster. Most teams use an aluminum version of the 426 Chrysler Hemi engine that produces an estimated 8,000 horsepower.

Jr. Dragster: A half-scale version of a Top Fuel dragster designed to be driven by kids ages 8-17 in the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League. Using a five-horsepower, single-cylinder engine, a Jr. Dragster can go as fast as 80 mph in as few as 7.90 seconds on the eighth-mile.

Methanol: Pure methyl alcohol used as fuel in Top Alcohol Dragsters, Top Alcohol Funny Cars, and even some Jr. Dragsters.

Nitromethane ("nitro") : Made specifically as a fuel for drag racing, it is the result of a chemical reaction between nitric acid and propane. Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars use nitromethane.

Nitrous Oxide ("nitrous," "N2O") : When injected into an engine under pressure, nitrous oxide gives the engine a sudden boost in power by introducing more oxygen into the fuel mixture. Nitrous oxide is not allowed in any NHRA category except Pro Mod (exhibition) and some Sport Compact and E.T. bracket classes.

Pro Stock: Pro Stock cars look a lot like street cars, but looks can be deceiving. Extensive modifications to the cylinder heads, manifold, chassis, and suspension thrust them to 6.7-second elapsed times at more than 200 mph. The cars are fitted with an all aluminum version of the chrysler 426 hemi pumping out an amazing 1200 horsepower.

Pro Stock Bikes: Producing more than 300 horsepower, these highly modified motorcycles can cover the quarter-mile in less than 7.1 seconds at more than 190 mph. The chromoly steel chassis is cloaked in a lightweight, aerodynamically enhanced replica of the original motorcycle body, and the carbureted gasoline engine may be a Harley V-twin, a two-valve, or a four-valve.

Reaction Time: The time it takes a driver to react to the green starting light on the Christmas Tree, measured in thousandths of a second. A perfect reaction time is .000.

Red Light: When a race car leaves the starting line too soon — before the green light, or "go" signal — it activates the red light on the Christmas Tree and the driver has automatically lost the race.

Top Fuel Dragsters: The fastest-accelerating vehicles in the world, these are the most recognizable of all drag race cars. The 25-foot-long landlocked missiles can cover the quarter-mile in 4.4 seconds at speeds faster than 330 mph. The engine of choice is an aluminum version of the famous Chrysler Hemi. The supercharged, fuel-injected nitromethane-burning engines produce an estimated 8,000 horsepower.

Tangerine Dream
Another Ride Rescued From “I’m Gonna Restore it Someday”

By Randy Bolig
Photography: Randy Bolig

It’s happened to most of us. We’re driving through town and spy some interesting iron sitting in a driveway or backyard. We’re not sure what we saw, so we turn back for a second look. Usually it’s a wasted trip around the block, but sometimes a treasure is uncovered.
What David Pannepacker of Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, stumbled across one day was a treasure in his eyes, although gratification was not instantly achieved. Upon his first inquiry into this ’69 Dart, David was greeted with the dreaded “not for sale,” yet he was undeterred. Whether the previous owner could tell David would take care of the car, or if he just got tired of David pulling into his driveway we may never know. For whatever reason, David got the keys, and with an updated title in hand, the restification began in earnest.

The seasoned body was given to Ott’s Auto Body in Salford, Pennsylvania, where it was treated to some needed repairs. A fiberglass hood, fenders, and bumpers were also employed, and the entire body was covered in an acrylic urethane shade of Tangerine. If the exterior looks good, the inside should as well. David added new black vinyl goods like seat skins, headliner, and door panels from Legendary Auto Interiors. He retained the factory gauge cluster and added Autometer tach, oil pressure, and water temperature gauges. Knowing from the beginning that this Dart would be a high-performance machine, a 10-point chromoly roll-cage and Simpson safety harnesses were included in the buildup. Then the fun really began.

David opened up a ’68 340 block to a 4.080-inch bore and polished the inside oil galleys to remove any imperfections. The lower portion of the block was filled, while the four-bolt main caps received studs to replace the bolts. A steel crankshaft with a 3.454-inch reach helps the Oliver rods slam the J&E pistons up and down. A Crower roller cam makes the Harland Sharp roller rockers open and close the valves in the W-2 heads. The combination is fed through a Victor Jr. intake supporting a Holley 830 HP carb. Leftover juice is sent through Super Comp headers to Raptor mufflers. Tire-buckling power goes through a 727 with a 4,500-stall converter, then out to the 8¾ Auburn-style rear featuring 4.88 gears. To plant the tires, David uses only a pair of super stock springs and an adjustable pinion snubber. Speaking of tires, Mickey Thompson carries the front and Hoosiers bring up the rear.

To date, David has run a best e.t. of 11.35 at 116 mph—not bad for a car that spent a large portion of its life just sitting beside a house. For every car that ends up rusting away in somebody’s backyard or driveway, David Pannepacker gives us hope that we all can eventually find our dream car if we just take a second trip around the block.

Couldn't find a hemi race article online, but found a small block instead! BTW The I saw a stock 426 hemi in a 70 challenger that hit 540 whp on the dyno bone stock!!! The kid who owned it was amazed, as he had no idea what he actually owned, he read up on them, and saw that they were rated at 425, so was expectin 380 or so at the wheels!!! think about it 540 whp in a dart with a glass front end, no heater, radio, seats, or side windows!!!! that equals 10's on street tires!

And all those 8000hp Nitro-Methane engines have the famous 426 Hemi as their anscestor. They are all based off the original legend the 426 Hemi. So, you just made full circle. Now you know why we all drive Dodges.

Aggie,

I would get the 4.7 instead of the 3.9. Now don't get me wrong, I turned over a 87 3.9 dak to my youngest this year with 200k on it. The truck was purchased new and was used as a truck until I turned it over to the teen this spring. The 3.9 is a great motor but when I purchased my new 01 dak I drove both a 3.9 and the 4.7. The 4.7 has more power, and gets better fuel economy according to the DC mileage est. I opted for the 5 speed and it is a 4x4 quad cab. I love the power, not much runs away from me on the street. My best buddy is a car salesman (35 years) for GMC and he has that new 5 cylinder mid size truck. I think it is called the Colorado, it is nice but, last weekend he and I took a road trip. My 4x4 ran away from him on hills and I smoked him light to light fooling around. Only thing I like about his new truck compared to my dak is his interior, esp the rear seats that are nicer than the daks, but hell that is a minor thing. Only thing I've done to it is improved my exhaust system. If you're looking for a mid size with lots of grunt the 4.7 dak is the way to go. If you're looking for a full size, look at the ram.

OH and you're wrong about elephant--mouse comment you made. the hemi is called the elephant motor because its huge looking and it has two big ears that i belive have somthing to do with the mounting not to mention the power they had. the small block Chevy did get its name the "mouse motor" because an elephant is supposed to be scared of a mouse, but the hemi had its name first.oh and the BBC got its name from being bigger than the mouse. just therw that in so you would'nt get confused about why they call it the RAT motor. For being a know it all chevy guy you know nothing or our history!

"hater said pro-stock chevys don't run crysler engines they run big block DRCE engines" no I didn't fu[k head! read it again. What else do I have to write about my road runner? You are the only one saying that it will not run 9's! did you see the part where its on a diet? It has no interior, just one plastic racing seat, plastic front bumper, no grille, heater removed, power steering removed, manual brakes, never had ac, many little trinkits taken off. I never said my car was pretty, it is actually kinda rough looking, but does run 9's so fu[k you! You really must be retarded, because everybody who knows anything, knows that auto transmissions lose 20% and 18% in a manual "Maybe" only 15% with the 3500 stall, and valve body in the auto.with 15% loss, he would have to have 635-ish at the crank, which is not hard to do with a STOCK street hemi! they were very very VERY under-rated. I will give good credit to one chevy motor the 427 its the only one worth a shlt, but still cant compare to the Elephant! Yes I do know what tires were made like then! Bias-ply polyester crap!!! So I gusee running 10's on a 60 series was pretty impressive! you are proving nothing to us mopar guys, other than the obvious....Chevy guys are all full of shlt ass holes who have too much time on their hands to bother people on dakota forums, and probably dont have cars at all! they just pretend to, so they can sound cool! Name a chevy, and what it is good at, I'll name a mopar that is better!!!!!! 454 4speed chevelle 1/4 mile.....440 six pak challenger kicks its ass! 350 camaro....340 duster, or swinger will masacre it! 427 vette..... hemi super bee! silverado...ram! s-10...dakota.. Holy shlt, its no contest we win all the time!!!! duramax diesel vs cummins powered ram....Do I need to tell you the horsepower, and torque ratings? Do ?I need to tell you the payload? Do I need to tell you the better fuel mileage of the cummins? Its no use talking to you, you chevy guys are so fu[king thick you cant beat it into you!!! Get a clue dumbass!

I raced stock for stock probably 50 of them, and never came close to losing! I had the shltty 3.55 gears too, With the 3.92's I'd have killed them even worse!
