Message: So i made another thread about aligning the engine with the tranny.
When I rebuilt the truck, I took the crank and heads to a local shop with a good reputation and had them grind and balance the crank and check out and grind the valves and heads. Aparently, the shop sends its cranks out to have them grinded, and I hear this is somewhat of a normal practice (they did just get their own grinder last week).
Now, I had made some marks just to be safe for alignment purposes on my crank. When I got my crank back, marks are gone, I figure they just gone ground off or something, no biggie. So when it comes time to put the engine back in, the knob in the middle of the auto-tranny wont fit into the crank. My buddy and I spent alot of time trying to get things aligned, and then today we pulled the engine back out to see what the deal is. Aparently, this service that was used to grind cranks has the option of doing a swap program, which im not so hot about, but I guess it does the job, since the crank I got back had .010 taken off, the same that my crank i sent in needed taken off. So, when we pull the engine back out, we realize that this crank swap was accompanied with a failure to communicate. My mechanic failed to notice that I gave him a crank from a auto, and he got traded with one for a manny tranny. The grinding shop failed to tell my mechanic that they were swapping him a manual transmission crank. I fail to inspect this area of the crank before installation. So you know wha this means, remove the pilot bearing. Thats why the tranny knob wouldnt fit. So we try the stupid "pack the hole with grease and pound a bolt into the hole" trick. All that does is make grease flow out around the tight-fitting bolt.
Sonofa. So we try to make a puller. We weld a pair of bolts to the bearing, and try to use a piece of U iron to pop the bearing out. We break the welds.
So now we drill and thread the darn bearing, and put bolts with nuts near the heads thru a piece of U iron and thru the holes in the bearing. We finally manage to get the bearing out.
Word of warning. Check your crank to make sure its compatible with your truck BEFORE you try to put it all back together.
