Subject: Problem aligning engine and tranny IP: Logged
Message: So I rebuilt the 3.9 in my '90, and this thing is being a real bear with the big knob in the middle of the torque converter. We have all the bolts started in their holes and the studs line up, but now when we jiggle either the tranny or the engine, both move together, and we cant get the knob to fit into the back of the engine. This darn knob seems like a real bother, since it dosnt even have any power transfer purpose.
Any tips from your engine installations?

Message: Sounds like the torque converter isn't fully engaged in the transmission pump. This happens a lot. When you do this, the converter will slide in and it seems to be there, but with a twist, it'll pop into the second engagement and slide a good inch or more even further. This will allow the tranny to flush up properly. You can rotate the tranny from the output shaft. With the tension on the converter, it should pop in place with a nice "thunk" and then you're there.
