Message: i don't do much highway driving and put about 8500km a yr on my truck. so while this one is on order i need some help on which gears to get. i went with the anti spin differential and the 3.55 gears. i don't race or nothing. just normal driving to work and back about 5 km. now, will i see any difference in performance if i go to the 3.92 gears? in my present 01 dak with 4.7 i have the 3.55 and dont think its that great. please help!!

Message: I have 3.92's on my '01 QC, 5.9l, 4x4. Love them. Just the right amount of gear for my kind of driving. I often travel at speeds of 80-85 mph for hours at a time. That puts the engine right up into the power band. Around town they are just a little short.
If I lived where traffic was often slower, or I did very little highway driving, I would consider 4.11 or 4.56.

Message: I've got an 03 4.7L with the 5-speed manual. I'm happy with the 3.55 gear. With the manual I can set the cruise at 100 km/h and turn less than 2000 RPM (not sure how that compares to the auto), 120 km/h is about 2200-2300 RPM. I'd say with short trips to work stick with the 3.55

Message: Go with 3.55s if you get a manual
I have them in my 2003 4.7 Quad Cab 4x4 with 5spd manual tranny. Test drove both, very little difference.
The Auto trannies would benefit more from the 3.92s, so if you are not getting the manual tranny, I would suggest the 3.92s since they are only a $40 option from factory.

Message: Highway mileage may be slightly better with 3:55's, but "joy of use" certainly goes to the 3:92's. City mileage is terrific with 3:92's. I lowered the gear ratio even more by going to R/T wheels and 255/55/17 (1"smaller diameter than stock 255/65/16).'01 4.7 5-spd RC 3:92.

Message: definately go with 3.92. I just changed from 3.55 to 4.11 because I didnt like the feel of the 3.55 and am going to put on larget tires. This cost me $1600.00. If I were to buy new I would have gone with and kept the 3.92. My mileage didnt change at all, my RPM's at 65 are about 2200.

Message: Rear gears are known as a "torque multiplier" - similar to the principal of leverage. Just as you can move something heavier with a longer pry bar, lower gearing (higher numerical) gives you a similar advantage in torque.

Message: 00 4.7 auto with 3.55s i could get consistantly 25 mpg on the hwy, but wanted more ummph, so i found a set of 4.11's and threw them in wow, she definately moves now, hwy mileage dropped to 19-22 mpg, so you'd loose some.
You gotta ask yourself one question...That Thing Got A HEMI???

Message: Wow 19-22 mpg, my best since I bought my 01 quad 4x4 4.7 in January was 14.5mpg. Usually I get 13.8Xmpg before and after gear change. I just added a Ebay cold air intake. Have to see if that matters and also what 17" rims with 295/75/17 or 305/70/17 tires do

Message: MPG comparisons are only valid if the vehicles are the same body type. A Regular Cab 4x2 manual trans. weighs 3707 pounds, while a Quad Cab 4x4 packs 4460 to 4485 with manual. The heaviest Dak made is a Quad 4x4 SLT Automatic at 4500 pounds. 800 pounds will do a number on fuel mileage. I had a '77 Dodge Van 318 Auto (3-spd) 3:23 that got 11.5-13 mpg from 4600 lb. curb weight, and that was '70's technology.
