Message:

Most of you by now are familiar with the Dodge Sprinter Van, but
did you know that it is equiped with a 2.7L 5-cylinder diesel
engine? And did you know that it requires the use of synthetic
oil and has a recommended oil change interval of 10,000 miles?

I sure hope that Dodge puts this engine in one of the new
Dakotas because it gets a whopping 25 mpg in the Sprinter
chassis. Can you imagine the fuel economy that it would get in
the Dakota?

I agree, prolly just the same. Besides the Dak chassis weight is prolly about equal if not more than the sprinter.

I bet that engine little diesel in a Dakota would make a great pickup. I would most likely get over 30mpg and accelerate pretty good to sence the sprinter has about 1000lbs on a dakota and worse aerodynamics.

It's a Benz baby!

2.7-liter I5 Mercedes-Benz Turbo Diesel engine produces 154 horsepower at 3,800 RPM and 243 pounds-feet of torque from 1,600 to 2,400 RPM.

Pretty respectable figures IMHO

The passenger version looks like it starts around $29K....ouch

If Dodge would sell a diesel Dakota here in the United States I
promise you that I would be the first in line to buy one.

You order that benz Diesal in the Jeep Liberty if you want to shell out more money. In Germany they use it in the larger Larado. I think T.T did a actical on the new motor. Its a I5 diesal thats rated @195 HP with 285 lbs of toruqe.

I'm no fan of Mercedes motors because there just not as good as a person might think. I'll keep buying from Chrysler untill the last Mopar powertrain is made.

Also might could order one in your Grand Cheroke. I read the artical in Truck Trend about the diesal powerd Larado with the 2.7 I5 MB engine. You can expect to see 25 MPG on Hwy use even going 80 MPH.

But when it blows apart (and knowing people who work on diesal dealing with Mercedes you can count on it) you'll find that you might just trade in what you got for a 4.0L I6.

You said MB motors aren't that good??? I had a 1982 300 D Turbo - W123 chasis. 315,000 miles. All original. That car was a "tank" and ran like brand new. The car was rear-ended. I sold it for $1,000 to a guy that destroyed the front end of his W123. He wanted to put the two cars together and make one good one. It is still on the road. 400,000 miles. Still going. Do you really have something better?

That was a 1982...items today are produced just slightly better than crap so youll have to take them in for the lucrative repair bill. I dont think there such thing as a "tank" built anymore.

Ive known of this motor getting to a million miles, especially
running a 20 weight Synthetic diesel oil like amsoils in it. my
Australian Ex Ambulance Sprinter is mad. With inmotiom chip
tune, the old one when Gunter owned it & my mates custom
3inch into twin 2 1/2 inch system with 3inch dump pipes exiting
before the back wheel on each side it makes 185Hp @ rear
wheels & 470nm torque peaking @ 2100rpm & holding that to
3700 -3800rpm & is making 400 @ 1500rpm. The joys of a big
bang firing 5 cylinder like a Viper V10 & Rossi's Moto GP Yamaha
LOL. My van sounds unreal bit like a Subaru WRX cross Audi
Quattro. & I still get 28mpg US sitting on 60mph. Im looking at
fitting a Ford 9inch with 2.75gears & maybe a Methanol Water
injection kit so look out 220hp & a 130-40mph possible top
speed. I have lowered mine 3 inches all round so she sits on the
rd killa. Plus the Aussie Ambo's run beefed up brakes, different
fuel tanks, no EGR valve & mine has the earlier 6 speed automated manual. no got in a straight drag but great for stalking little 4 cylinder hot hatches in winding mountain rds
with alot of slow bends & short straights.
The best thin in Aussie is you only pay between 12 & 19000 Aus
dollars for an Ambo Sprinter 316 with every option box ticked. Approx. $30000 of extras over the list price for a 316 Sprinter straight off the floor with no extras. The Aussie ambos also run
the same spec Auto 5 speed as the AMG V8s & SRT8 300C's.
They had this done as because our ambos were driving up & over
medium strips in the congested cities & the standard 5speeds
were blowing up. The army & ambo's also get a handful of
special 5 speed factory auto 4WD model of the sprinter with the
2.7 5 cylinder. No where else in the world can you buys these in
that spec. @ a approx. cost of $120000 aus dollars you can buy
them @ government Auctions for 23-25 thousand with 60000
miles. But they are rare maybe only 50-100 ever made.
regards Paolo

Yeah but you can keep your Sprinter even though they have many configurations. I still wished Ford had kept the Excursion. I have to say even though I'm not a Ford fanatic; the new (in house) built Power Stroke is very impressive.

Hey guys, w/o going into any detail I'm gonna say this engine
is a killa all the way around.
I've got the 2.7 ltr. 5cyl turbo-diesel MB in my Mercedes
Sprinter. In this case it's hauling 10k lbs. with a Winnebago on
its back. Ya, a class C motorhome.
We bought it new back in '06. Frankly, I can't stop driving it
despite the bulk, though easy to drive/park. I'm averaging
18/23 mpg. minimum. Recommended engine oil is Mobil 1
Synthetic. After the first three yrs. the service center switched
to Pennzoil Platinum Premium Plus. Probably because they
get a better deal on it. They claim it's as good if not better than
the Mobil 1. No issues w/ MB or warranty. Still sounds and
runs like charm. I drive by using the triptronic shifter sparing
excessive break wear and still squeeze the mileage on this
thing. Tell you the truth, I drive it as much as my car every
week. Love it!
