Subject: Rear Axle Not Centered
IP: Logged

Message:
There is a problem with some QCs where the rear axle is not centered, e.g. the right rear tire extends 0.5 to 1 inch further out than the left tire. Has anyone had this problem fixed, and if so what was the actual cause of the problem?

Thanks!

Correct me someone if I'm wrong, but I think it has to do with the bed alignment, nothing to do with the actual axle/frame fitment. I noticed on my '01 QC it has the same problem you're referring to. I haven't taken it in, yet. I plan to soon and also my front-end alignment is off, would DC fix this under warrenty because it was off from the first day it seems (almost positive)? It has about 8,000 miles on it. Or should I take it to a reputable place other than the dealership to have the front-end alignment done?

P.S. DC must have problems aligning things :-(.

OK, I'll correct you...

Actually, I'll just put forth my opinion. My truck too has this little "quirk", and I can't help thinking that it's the reason my truck wanders to the right whenever I let go of the steering wheel.

My bed seems perfectly lined up, but - yes - my right rear sticks out nearly an inch farther than the left. My dealer flat-out refuses to do anything about it, stating that it's "normal" and "within specs", and since I put the flares on it, it IS less noticable, but I'm pretty disappointed in DC about this, and I'll know to look MUCH MORE closely before taking delivery of my next DAK (hopefully a '05 5.7 350HP hemi).

My diff is offset and my box was also, the dealer alligned the box,as the part that stuck out was losing paint from road crap,he is going to paint my box all under warrenty.I have no steering probs left or right.I really dont have a problem with the offset diff but I can understand why someone might. The whole deal is kind of strange as to why it is like that in the first place.I myself try to save my stress quota for the really bad stuff. My dealer has been great but when I asked him why (the offset) his eyes glazed over and he started talking about the weather.

When I got my QC the bed was perfectly aligned over the axle looking at the tires but the bed didn't line up right with the cab. I brought it in to have the bed lined up with the cab figuring after that was aligned my axle would be slightly off like the otheres seem to be. To my surprise the dealer told me that the CAB was aligned improperly with the bed. They adjusted the cab mounts. When I got it back everything is lined up perfect and the axle looks the same on both side of the bed.

mine drifts right also. I brought it in to the dealer, they told me the air pressure was wrong in my tires. They "fixed" it. My ass. they rotated the tires. It still pulls...drives me batty. I may just take it to a real place to have it aligned. And my rear right wheel sticks out too. They told me more or less i was seeing things. Thanks alot DC.

My bed was also misaligned. My truck is 2x4 extended cab. The dealer said all the 2x4 were misaligned. The dealer tried to straighten it but still was a little off. So I complained. The dealer said all the Ford and Chevys are off too. I replied "Did you check any Toyota's or Nissans ?" Of course he said no. Also I asked him what the tolerance was for the bed. He didn't know. I was disappointed. So much so I almost traded it in for a Tundra and I still might.

I have an appointment tomorrow at a dealership, Tom Matson Dodge, to hopefully fix the problem. I'll let you know how it goes... probably say it's not off you're seeing things, but I have my trusty ruler that proves otherwise!

I owned a 94'& 95' Toyota, also a 96'& 97' Chevy ZR2 S10 and all the beds were off. It was really no big deal to fix. Just loosen up the bed bolts and true it up with the cab, but the 97' Chevy was so bad that I had to dremmel the bolt holes to allow more clearance so I could square it up. Looking around at the dealers I haven't come across to many trucks that were squared and true. They've all been pretty much off to some degree or another. When they build the trucks they just bolt them together and if your real lucky you get one that's just right. One of the good things if you by off the lot, you can check this stuff out. Would you guys keep your fingers crossed for me when my 2002 Dakota hit the dealers lot? Thanks !!!

"No Problem Found/Normal-Condition" is what Tech#28 said and even the front-desk guy saw the right wheel sticking out more and I showed him on the ruler... then I asked them about the yellow-sluge, they added some "special" baffle and filler-cap. The baffle looks like a gimmick, just some piece of molded plastic that's removable from the filler tube (4.7L)... I have no idea how it's going to stop condensation (it probably won't).

I just checked, while getting gas, and my right rear sticks out .25 inches more than the left. How strange... the bed seems straight, as does the axle. Oddly enough, it APPEARS to be centered on the frame rails!

Truck is straight though, the frame isn't bent. So it looks like one side of the axle is longer than the other? The tires are wearing properly, so I'm not going to worry about it a lot.

Mine used to go straight, then I went offroading and hit a dirt berm at 40mph, flew for 20ish feet, and landed in a pothole. Now it wanders right a tiny bit. :0P

Of course, my OLD car's entire drive train was mounted on a slight angle. The right front tire was .5 inches further back than the front left. "Condition Normal" is what Chevy said. Bah. When it didn't pull, the tires wore funny.

Cavaliers suck.
