Subject: Suspension and Rims IP: Logged
Message: Hello All,
I am looking to purchase a 2001 Quad Cab Dakota 4x2 4.7L in the near future. I have a couple of questions maybe someone can answer for me.
1) What are the lowering options for the Dakota (besides air bags)? Is it the standard 2"/4" drop like most trucks?
2)What size rims can fit on the Dakota if moderately lowered (like a 2"/4" drop)? Could 18" or bigger rims fit? What size tires do you recommend for 18" or bigger rims?
Thanks

Message: A 2/4 is a nice, moderate drop that'll give you a nice stance without affecting the overall ride too much. I'm seriously looking into that, although I've previously sworn that I wouldn't.
If I could have it the way I want it, I would go with 2" spindles (alignment pretty much unaffected), and leaf springs (I HATE the way blocks leave the springs so close to the ground, and hangers or shackles are a total bitch to install).
So far, I haven't seen any spindles available, but the leaf springs are out there.
In any case, you'll need "lowering" shocks to firm up the travel a little, and you'll likely need to trim your bump-stops a bit.
18" rims are an easy fit, and I know at least one guy who sports 20's. I'm thinking 255/50/18's for mine. If the overall tire height/width is the same as my stock ones (255/65/16), there shouldn't be an issue, just remember to check the backspacing before you buy the rims.

Message: do get a 2/4 drop you can do either a 2" lowered controll arm or 2" spring.(if you use the lower A-arm you will need to reuse the stock balljoint, because the lowered ones dont come with them) for 4" in the rear you can do a leaf spring (which will give you a harsher ride) or do a 2" shackle (verry easy to install) and 2" block (also verry easy to install)
with a 2/4 drop you can fit 22's and maby 23" inch rims (im not sure if they have a 30 series tire in a 23 yet)
I have a 4/6 drop in mine and im running a 255/35ZR20 it rubbs a little in front but i can put up with it.
if you are getting 20's i would strongly recomend the goodyear 275/45HR20 they would be the perfect fit on a 2/4 they are verry inexpencive ($145 each)and will last a lot longer than the Z-ratted tires.
