Subject: 4x2 or 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: hi everyone. i am a newbie here and just need some advise. i am ordering a 2004 dakota quad and it has the chrome appearance pkg with the 17" chrome rims and performance tires and the chrome step tubes. now should i get the 4x4 with these rims and tires. will i be worse off? also does the 4x4 make any difference in performace ?just want an opinion before its too late to stop the order.all replies appreciated.i have never seen anything other than an r/t with the 17" rims around, so i dont know if it would look to weird with a 4x4 and performance tires.lol. thanks

Message: I prefer the 4x4 because I occasionally go off road to cut wood or just fool around. Plus you're better off in the snow. But in either case, be sure to get the lsd. I had an 01 4x2 without lsd and got in several situations I could have used both wheels drivin' the dang thing. Be aware that the 4x4 costs more initially and costs more to maintain.

Message: if you dont NEED 4x4 dont get it! it makes your truck heavier (slower) taller (top heavy so it doesn't corner as well) more expensive to buy (obvious) more expensive to repair ( more parts to wear out, and more labor charges in the shop when they do break) I saw a 4x4 with rt rims, and it looked kinda funny! It had too big of a space between the tire and wheel well! You could get bigger tires to fill the gap. If you live where there is a lot of snow, get 4wd, I live by lake erie, and get tons of the white garbage, but survive with my 2wd It pushes through bumper deep snow if you make it!

Message: thanks for you ideas everyone. i really only have a few times a year that i guess i really need it for snow and all, so considering the fact it costs big bucks to fix and all i guess the 4x2 will do.i just thought it would be nice being higher up but the fact with sporty rims it might take away from the appearance.

Message: My last truck was a 2wd drive Ranger. AFter 5 winters of driving sideways in the snow and not being able to make it up a mild incline in my driveway even with 250 pounds in the bed, I decided Id never drive a 2wd again.

Message: After 5 winters with a 2wd, lsd, 5-70lb sand bags from the rear axle forward and Bridgestone Blizzacks, I have never had a situation that my truck could not get through. Tires make all the difference.

Message: Good for you. I put some of the best tires I could buy on there after the last winter. They helped but I still got stuck, even with a few hundred pounds out back. I also admitted I was driving a smaller vehicle with a poorer center of gravity than a 2wd Dakota. But I decided then I wanted 4x4 for a few reasons.
1) I can afford it and therefore why the heck not? It's like my gun. Id much rather have it around and rarely if ever need it then not have it and need it.
2) I can go offroad, which I plan to do.
3) I like the look of a 4x4 more than a 4x2.I like the meatier tires and I like the look of the extra ground clearance.
4) I swore to myself since my last truck was a stripper that ID go all out and get all the cool options I wanted this time around.
Therefore dont get it if any of the following applies to you:
1)You live in a climate where you dont need it.
2) Could not care less about going offroad.
3)Dislikle the look of a 4x4.
PErsonally, yes I used it last winter. My driving style is to go as far as 2wd will take me then flip the switch when Im not moving anymore. So yes I found myself in situations where I might not have been going anywhere for awhile if I hadn't had 4x4.

Message: I agree the tires make alot of difference. I drive a 4x2 and had the OEM crap Goodyear eagles on and it sucked in snow. I just recently put some Yokohama Geolanders H/T-S's on and it made alot of difference in the snow and ice.

Message: 4x4 works much better than 2wd in snow or off road. You just can't take a 2wd places you can go with a 4x4. That said,if you stay on pavement 99% of the time. You don't need a 4X4 and that's true of most people who have them. They turn it on once a year just because its there and wouldn't think of getting mud on the thing. Where I live 90% of the trucks are 4x4. In the cities most are 2wd.
