Subject: ANY TIPS ON FRONT BRAKE JOB? IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I will be replacing my front rotors and pads on my 01 quadcab in a couple days and I was wondering if anyone had helpfull tips or suggestions on this job. I have already picked up a good set of rotors and pads. Any tips on bleeding system with ABS, what special tools I might need, etc.
Any help would be appreciated as its been a while since I've attempted a brake job, and never on this truck.
Thanks
Chris

Message: all you gotta do is properly pack grease in the brngs in the rotors. to install the pads first open the brake resivoir and if you have added fluid you will need to remove some to prevent overflow when you squeeze the caliper pistons in.
to do this there is no need to open any bleed screws, you only need a c clamp or very large channel lock pliers, with the pad on the piston only squish the piston in, being careful to center the clamp or pliers as not cock the piston in the bore.
then the first time you pres the pedal it will go down until the piston moves up to the rotor, then a few hard brake applications wil properly seat the new perts
good luck

Message: I have done mine several times without taking the rotors off for surfacing. Its a 10 minute job on each side. I used a haynes manual to do it my first time. Very easy, there are only a few steps. You will need a 6" c-clamp to compress the piston.

Caliper came off with a 7mm allen wrench. Put some antiseize on the bolts when you reinstall.
Clean up the surfaces of the caliper mounting bracket where the ears on the pads ride and put some high temp waterproof grease on them.
The rotor should come off the hub, but you may need a rubber mallet to beat it off depending on how rusted it is.
Clean any rust off the hub surfaces and put everything back together.
When you push the piston back into the caliper, open the bleeder valve so the old fluid doesn't get pushed back into the master cylinder.
Suck as much old fluid out of the reservoir as possible and refill with new.
Get a vacuum bleed tool and bleed all the wheels until fresh fluid comes out.
Test drive and bed in the pads and rotors according to the manufactures instructions.

Message: Did mine this weekend with air tools-25 minutes to do both sides. All you need is a T-45 Torx, Dead Blow Hammer, Needle nose pliers to remove the spring type piece that holds the outer pad tight. If yours is like mine you'll need to hit the rotor about ten times just to loosen it from the hub. Spray some wd40 on the hub adn put the new one on. Don't worry about bleeding the fluid. As little as you'll move the piston back in with the c-clamp, it would never make it back up to the reservoir. Plus as long as you have no leaks it should be clean. Closed loop system

Message: chris these guys got it explained pretty good all im gonna add is your truck is not that old, so you should not have any problems keeping the bleed screw closed so you dont risk air gettin in the system.
to properly pack a taper roller bearing with grease first grab a good guality bearing grease. place a few tablespoons worth of grease on the palm of one hand (this is where you feel like a mechanic) and grasping the bearing in the other hand, press and rub the grease forcing it into the end of the bearing until the grease starts coming out the other end. do this all the way round the bearing then smear a light film over the exposed rollers.
this is the proper way to pack a bearing.
its also a good idea to smear a light coat of grease on the inside of the hub casting as to prevent rust should moisture enter.
hope that helpsssss

Message: Another great way to pack bearings... get a bearing packing tool (looks like 2 very shallow funnels), cost about 8-bucks US...
Assemble it with your bearing inside, grease gun onto fitting and pump till it shows... disassemble and use the excess to coat the outside of the bearing pack, inside the races, and in the inner hub as JD suggests.
This method allows you to sip your beer more often without dropping it as it slides out of your hands. :)

Message: Be very carefull with the slide bolts that hold the caliper. The heads have a tendency to strip out...especially if you've had someone else(elcheapo brake shops) do your brakes before.

Message: The 01 should have sealed front hub bearings. No way to pack these bearings since they are sealed and pressed into the wheel hub, not the rotor. You might want to check the torque on the hub bearings while your in there, it's suppored to be 185 ftlb, 36mm nut. I replaced one of my hub bearings since the hub nut backed off causing alot of play in the bearing. It kind of sucked since the hub bearing wasn't actually bad. Since it was a sealed bearing I couldn't see the bearing condition until the bearing was out and no longer able to be reused.
Make sure to clean and grease the caliper slide bolts and pad-caliper contact areas where the pads will slide. Also, if the pads didn't come with the anti-squeel shims use some anti-squeel compound on the back of the pads, I like the the spray can stuff.
This is the most important part, ADJUST THE BACK BRAKES. If you back brakes are out of adjustment the front brakes are doing 90-100% of the braking, which they were not designed for. You will notice a big improvement once the back brakes are adjusted correctly, the truck will not nose dive when braking. I adjust the back brakes every 5-6K during the oil change and they usually need 2-3 clicks since the self adjusters don't work properly. I think most of the brake problems associated with the Daks is due to the rear brakes not being adjusted properly since I got 30K out of cheap ($90) AutoZone pads and rotors by keeping the back brakes in adjustment.

Message: Thanks for all your help guys.
Got it done yesterday, and it went pretty smooth, except for 1 caliper bolt that I almost striped!!
Thanks again , this forum is great.
