Message: I hope so. There was news on it today. My only concern is that it stays true to the concept with the classic styling and doesn't end up as some Mercedes clone.

Message: I was wathching Dave....Wind Tunel on Speed Channel last night and he said it was supposed to be here spring 2005. They are already in the process od trying to get it into NASCAR. NASCAR has not approved it yet because the race car version of a model is supposed to reasemble the real production version. NASCAR is saying that this isn't possible. Either NASCAR will have to bend the rules a little to allow the 2005 Charger into NASCAR or Dodge will be out.

Message: Wip: I don't think it will mean Dodge is out. From what I got from the show was that ALL makes will need to conform to a 'template' body. If the Charger doesn't fit reasonably I can see them using the new Intrepid intsead. = my $0.02

Message: Isn't NASCAR moving to one template for all makes anyway?
In any case, Wip: NASCAR vehilces have not resembed the real production versions since the '80s. Stick-on headlights aren't enough. Those are true race vehicles, linked to the production cars only by name.

Message: NASCAR watered-down the term "stock" car in 1985 when they allowed Terry Labonte to race a "sillohette" of a front-drive Oldsmobile 88. Of course, factory frames and bodies were long gone by then. The only brand connection now is the decals and engine block.

Message: They still have to resemble the stock production car. The 2005 Charger comes no where close to the current NASCAR templates. That was a problem back in the early 90's. Dodge didn't have a car that fit NASCAR's parameters. I'm sure NASCAR will let the Chrager in, but it may take a while for them to agree on what template they will use.

Message: Whiplash, I think you have suffered one too many. They do not have to resemble the production car anymore, that whent clean out the window when the Taurus was introduced. The Taurus to be raceable had the front end lenghtened six inches, the a-pillar angle changed and the factory down-slopeing decklid raised. When the two were put side by side there was no comparision.
At one time the cars had to fit a template from a production car, that has not been the case in about eight years. Also the cars at one time had to use factory sheet metal for the hood, roof and decklid, that went away. 2002 was the last year that any factory sheet metal had to be used in the cars.
Dodge did not race in the 90's because they had nothing to use for a body and they had no engine that was capable of the horsepower and durability that was needed, not to mention that at the time Chrysler had no interest in NASCAR racing.
As for a template it has to meet the current templates, a majority that are common between all makes. You refine the shape of the Intrepid, add a new nose change the rear and you can go racing.

Message: Ummm, actually Dodge WAS racing and winning, but not in NASCAR. They did, however, give fits to the other brands in the ARCA series. Anyone remember the LeBaron? They were stretched, as mentioned, and the cars could meet NASCAR requirements, but Mopar wasn't ready to commit. They, instead, started an engine development program involving the Supertrucks series. It should be mentioned that the engines used in the ARCA races basically picked up where Mopar left off when it quit NASCAR, and they proved to be quite capable. Naturally, the newer incarnations had teething issues with the NASCAR requirements. There had been no development to speak of for over 15 years. It's a damned shame that, once again, NASCAR is screwing with what the auto makers will design by essentially eliminating the body differences. Anyone consider where we'd be now if there weren't so many rules dictating things with NASCAR now? Funny, I thought we already had a "template" race division called IROC. Consider the Daytona/Superbird cars. They were so hobbled by NASCAR in '71, the aerodynamics wars died and those God-awful ugly cars of the 70's were what resulted (all deference to OPEC aside). Instead of pushing the teams to make more durable engines, and Goodyear to make better tires, they're making rules that destroy the individuality of the brands, and before long, well, why bother? They're making it easier, not harder to finish. They'll all be the same. At least the Pro Stock NHRA cars still have to have most of their factory sheetmetal. Personally, I wish they didn't even have in-car radios. It's just cheating when the spotter tells the driver how to drive. Anyone know where I can get DVD's of REAL NASCAR racing from the 60's?
