Subject: Rear Sway in Bumpy Cornering IP: Logged
Message: This is my first truck/leaf-sprung vehicle, so please be gentle... I sold my 88 Mustang 5.0 to get this 98 extended cab SLT w/ 5.2V8.
When taking turns over bumps, the rear end seems to sway a bit. Is this just an inescapable feature of trucks? Its not horrible, and I'm not expecting sports-car handling, but I'd like to see if I can mitigate it with some low-buck/shadetree solutions.
Ideas?
Also, are there more exotic solutions (panhard bars?) that do not radically alter the overall geometry and function of the OEM suspension?

Message: With an empty bed, the stock shocks are a little harsh for decent handling - airing down the rear tires helps (I run 50 psi front,40 psi rear) as will going to better shocks.

Message: my quad came with a rear sway bar also gas shocks. I swaped out the sway bars for Hotchis bars front and back and replaced shocks all around with a good hydrolic shock.
Shocks were much cheeper and worth about 70% of inprovement in cornering. Much reduced body role and more solid cornering. You may be able to find a stock rear sway bar to add or start with better shocks. I would start with the shocks if I were you. almost anything is better than the stockers.

Message: I've still got the stock shocks on my '01 RC. I can verify the rear-end "hop" when cornering over bumpy surfaces. I installed a factory R/T rear sway bar, and about 90% of the problem disappeared. Note that the Sport swaybar is a smaller diameter.

Message: The R/T rear sway bar is the way to go. My R/T drives SO MUCH better than my SLT. No hopping or bouncing over bumps in the rear, but it does slide the front end worse than the SLT.

Message: I've heard of active suspension which basically is a shock that fits overtop of your leaf spring. Never tried it before.

Message: Actually that's a spring, not a shock. I found that to be an excellent alternative to add-a-leaf type mod, might help with this issue a little but is more for better handling with a trailer or a load. Not as harsh a ride as the add-a-leafs, and about 2" lift.

Message: I have the handling package on my 2003 AWD Sport and the corning is excellent for a truck. The 265/70x16 grip pretty good too with 50lbs in all four. The heavier sway bar probably would be an advantage. I'm not sure which one is in the package. It is by far the best handling truck I've driven. I haven't tried the R/T though.

Message: Try getting caltracs in addition to the sway bars and then see how bumpy it gets. hahah
