Subject: 93 Dakota Computer problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 93 Dakota that recently died. I can't start the engine at all. I hear the engine trying to turn but there's no current flowing to the spark plugs and I've tested the resistance on the coil and found it normal. I replaced the Distributor cap, rotor and the pick-off coil too (just in case). All signs point to what I think is the ignition module (i've heard people refer to it as the "engine computer/controller"). The unit is mounted on the right fender with a large plug of wires connecting to it in the center. When I called the local dealership they said the replacement part (not even the same as the original) is $600. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and what they did to solve them. Also: where could I find wiring diagrams to troubleshoot the module? Thanks for any help!

Message: I had a similar problem with my 1990 Dakota. I also replaced the distributor and magnetic pickup, but after some investigation I found that the timing belt had busted. It's $25.00 and pretty easy to replace yourself if that's it. Good luck.

Message: my 93 did the same thing ,your fuel pump probably isnt working either. i wasnt the chain,
i you suspect the timing chain ,take the distributor cap of ,crank the engine and see if the rotor spins , if it dosent ,you need a chain , and its not that easy to swap
check for codes ,get pen and paper ready. put key in ignition switch turn to the next step ahead
turn key from that position to ON not start then off,(not all the way back) to ON to off to on and leave it ,the service engine light well flash out a code ,it well flash a number of times one after the other then a pause then it well flash again, mark down the the number of flashes before a pause, this indicates one didgit on a 2 didget code the ones after the pause are the second number
remove the wiring harness from the fire wall it has one bolt check for corrosion. clean with soft brush and baking soda to remove any green gook.clean with eletrical cleaner before reinstall the harness to the fire wall. when satisfied try to start.
in the under hood fuse panel , check to see if you have power to the panel with the ignition on, check the fuses with a tester or multimeter.no visuals, and check that you have power in at least 2 spots on the stater relay ,ASD relay, fuel pump relay,
at the rear of the battery you well find a black connector, open it up check terminals, for corrosion.trace back the red/white wire to the distribution center and over to the PCM, you should have 12 volt on this wire at terminal 3 (its the battery terminal for the PCM )on the PCM as well as at the distribution center
on the same connector trace out th dark blue wire to a splice check it for corrosion
check the coil plug for power .across its harness.
if no power ,check injector's for pulse
,trace the grey wire to terminal 19 on the PCM and the darkgreen/ orange wire to terminal 57 on the PCM SHOULD HAVE POWER AT TERMINAL 57 with ignition on.

Message: I have a 93 Dodge Dakota v6 3.9L. While driving the truck automaticly shuts off. It use to only do this while I was turning, but now it does it while I am going over 60 too. I took it to two mechanics and they both could not find anything wrong because they could not replicate the problem. Sometimes the truck dies 4 or 5 times in a row and then doesn't die for a month. Also the oil pressure drops to zero when slowing down. The crank sensor and fuel gauges have been replaced. Any suggestions?

Message: Check wiring harness from ' underhood fusebox'
back to firewall - unwrap the protecting 'tape'
look for a "splice " ' connection ' of 3 to 4
wires , if looks suspicious at all, REDO it
Solder and tape or use a GOOD splice connector..
power to fuel pump and other vital requirements
goes thru this splice..
Also check and clean those large
" quick disconnects " on battery cables..
