Subject: WARNING - PERAGON BED COVER
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently installed my Peragon cover. I wish I'd spent the extra money and gone with an Access or Pace Edwards instead. I fell for the "marketing" and all the positive comments on this board and wanted to set the record straight so no one else falls for this scam.

The power coat scratches by looking at it. It has already begun to fade and look cheap. I really hope it never hails again, or I'm REALLY screwed as the aluminum is thin and flimsy. It easily dents. If a thief wanted in there, all they'd have to do is stand on the cover and it would collapse right in (not that they claim it is theft-proof, but plastic would be more theft-proof).

If something rolls to the front of your bed, you have to crawl up there and pull it out in order to open the cover because of the way it accordians into the bed when it opens. You can't put anything in the front quarter of the bed and close the cover because the cover can't open unless the front quarter of the bed is empty.

There's an art to opening it. You push in the crease between the first two panels and then get ready to catch the back as it flies shut, or else it flings itself to the front of the truck. If you don't catch it, then it flies with enough force that it might break itself. They even warn you of this in the installation instructions.

When you first get it installed, it takes two people to open - one pushing on each side - until the hinges are broken in.

You can only lock it open in one position.

There's a bar that runs about two feet from the front of the bed, an inch above the bed, from one side to the other that holds the ramps (for the rollers) in place. It's very obtrusive. You can remove the bar and fasten the ramps (themselves intrusive) to the side of the bed, but that defeats the purpose, in my opinion.

If you remove the crossbar and don't fasten the ramps to the sides, the sections slide underneath the ramps and you have to fight to get it back on the ramps.

It has little plastic covers on the back that are held in with one screw and pivot up and look like an afterthought.

The cover rattles, not loud enough to hear inside the truck, but if you're in parking structure you can hear it on it's "sealed bearings".

The sealed bearings sound cool, but they don't sit in tracks. The sit on ledges and rely on the cover always staying parallel to sit properly. If you get the cover a little sideways, they can slip off from where they are. This makes it hard to install more than anything, but if it jumps off the tracks because you removed the "anti-sway" bar for the tracks, or because you locked it open in it's one position, then it can come off the ledges and you have to fiddle around with it to get it to work again.

The cover is also difficult to remove. You either have to roll it all the way to the end of the bed after loosening (and with the Daks, you have to 'fan' it over the wheel wells), or you remove the cross bar and push the ramps out of the way, lower it through the slots on the track, then angle it through. Quite an exercise.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

WOW!!!! Sounds like you've had a bear of a time with your Peragon. I, on the other hand, have not had a single negative issue with mine. Works perfectly for my purposes -- open it to haul big stuff, close it to haul little stuff (I have a board crossways in the bed to keep things from sliding forward - as I have had with every other cover I've had). Installation was a breeze -- took no time at all. No scratches or fading whatsoever. I'm absolutely elated with this cover. Well worth the money in my opinion. To each his own I guess. Any other opinions?

Jes -

Thanks for the info. Good idea on the board to stop stuff from rolling. I'll try that.

I realize different people have different needs. This cover may be fine for some people. I am just very frustrated with the quality and how it works (since you can't look at it in a store, first). I doubt I will buy something online again if I can't see it in person. It's my fault, not blaming the company. BUT, I want to give the other side so people don't go into it blindly.

Thanks for the info 2001sltcc,
The peragon was my fist choise for a bed cover, pace edwards was second and the access was third.
I ended up getting the access roll top because of a tool box I have in the bed. that eliminated the first two. I do like the access but wanted a hard cover. Mine also has a lock funtion but a simple pocket knife works well to cut open the cover and unlock it.

I am happy with my rolltop cover now that I am used to it but still want a hard cover. Your post makes me feel a little better about my decision, this cover does not hinder the bed space at all.

Mine was about $450, I thought the peragon was around $600.
Thanks for the post and good luck.

I purchased an Extang soft cover with the velcro sides instead of snap fasteners. It fits flush and looks great. The bows roll up with the cover and it has straps to hold the roll. Got it online from www.truckcandy.com $299 and free shipping. Extang RT

Breadman -

I really wanted the hard cover to be more of a theft deterrent than the soft I had before. I carry a lot of tools and building material, but also want the flexibility to remove the cover if I need to pick up a large piece of equipment (rules out fiberglass cover).

Oh, well. Can't have it all, I guess. I will probably look into one of the foldable hard covers or the Pace Edwards more next time.
