Subject: V6- will I hate myself?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm looking at 2 2002 QC Dakotas. Both are the same color, clean and price-$16K.
Truck "A" has:
V8 auto
24K miles
tonneau cover
needs tires in 8 months

Truck "B" has:
V6 auto
14K miles
bed liner
brand new tires
loud custom exhaust
running boards
limited slip gears

I think the V6 is the best deal on paper. How bad am I going to hatre the V6? I drive to work and tow a 17' boat to the river locally in the summer.

I agree. Get the V8. The differance in fuel mileage is so small as to not be a facter.

My friend wanted the v6 qc 4x4 and that's what he bought.

I think that it was about 2 days after that he said "I should have bought the 4.7 V8.

Tell the dealer to swap the tires and rims to the other truck.

All of the other accessories can be added later for not too much money.

I didn't think there was a real question here.

A QC, a v6, or a v8? You need to think about that?

What about all the other options? Trailer towing package, etc. When I was real young, I used to think the the trailer towing just meant a seperate receiver and hitch.

Dude, don't do it!! I've owned a 2001 SLT 3.9L V6 and a 2002 4.7L V8. The 4.7L actually got better gas mileage on the interstate than the 3.9L by 2mpg. 50/50 city/highway they got the same. All city driving the 3.9L beat the 4.7L by a misserable 1/2mpg. Both of my SLT's were RC. I was misserable with the 3.9L. The QC you want is about 600lbs heavier. It will be a major road turd.

It's up to you, and your realistic expectations. If you want lots of excess power on tap buy the V8. The lack of a limited slip, needing tires soon and 10k additional miles are negatives in the consideration process. As for the V6, loud exhaust and running boards are potential negatives for that purchase. How much weight is in the boat and trailer and will you have to pull it on any long grades? The V8 would get the not for this if the boat is heavy and you live in the hills. If gas prices don't get under control, the less fuel efficient vehicle will get old fast as a commuter (so can loud pipes). Do a search here and find out what others realistically get for gas mileage and use that as a measurement tool. I have a V6 in my Gen II and find it does well including towing a car trailer, but I have a Barracuda for when I want to go fast. But that’s not to say the Dakota doesn’t hold it’s own, it sent home the entire field of imports on street trophy night. I lost to a slower Ram when I broke out of my dial in but ended up third. The magnum V6's are more powerful than the 70’s 318’s, but it depends on what seat of the pants feeling you are after. Drive them both and pick the one you like the most.

My 96 RC Sport had a V6 and a five speed manual. It was merely adequate, bone stock. And that was on a truck that weighed less then 3500 lbs.

A QC must weigh in at about 4300-4400 lbs with a V6. You do the math.

Please do yourself a favor and get the V8.

Thanks gentlemen. I appreciate your comments. I think I already knew the answer to this question, but having driven Ford Rangers for the last 10 years; I guess I needed a "Dodge owners perspective" on the matter.

Yeah, I had the music too, i was going crazy trying to figure out where it was coming from.

I pull an 18' boat fine with my v6. The exhaust may cause you to lose some power depending on how big it is, and if there is any thinge else done to the truck. If it's important to say you have a v8 then get it. But the v6 will still do what you want it to.

This is my first time here and I don't want to tick anyone off. If you can tell me how to make it stop, I'll do it. I don' t see it as an option anywhere; on or off...Redline

I have the v-6 in a fullsize Ram and it gets 19 mpg average with a 5 speed.
Wife has the 4.7 in a Durango and it gets 16 mpg average.
I like the V-8 better

Redline,
If you are getting a new 3.7L v6 then you might be happy with it. By all means, avoid the 3.9L. It is bad short on torque. They actually lowered the gas mileage rating on this engine from 2001 to 2002. I got 19mpg one time with my 3.9l RC SLT Dak. I drove 310 miles at 55mph with only one stop. I never got the RPM's over 2000. I never passed anybody and I coasted to a stop the 6 times I had to stop. 19mpg was all it would get. It had about 15,000 miles on it when it got that. The first 15,000 miles on my 4.7L it averaged 17mpg. It hit 19mpg regularly on the interstate driving 80mph.
